XGL/Beryl: Showcasing Progress or Shortcomings?

I just don't get it. Offering XGL and Beryl to the Linux masses is fantastic, don't get me wrong. However, I simply feel like too much emphasis is being placed on a “pretty desktop” versus functionality.
