Vixta is a new Linux distribution, first released only last month, based on the not-yet-released Fedora 8. Its main objective is to emulate the visual aspects of Microsoft Vista. Version 095 contains the newest, and sometimes unstable, versions of software. The project's goals include being free in every sense, requiring absolutely no configuration, and being user-friendly, eye-catching, and familiar. Too bad the goals don't include feature-complete and stable.

With Ubuntu 10.04 Alpha 2 having made it out yesterday, we couldn't resist but to run some new benchmarks of the Lucid Lynx after our original tests last month found Ubuntu 10.04 was off to a poor performance start. In some areas the performance of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Alpha 2 remains lower than in Ubuntu 9.10 -- largely due to performance regressions upstream in the Linux kernel -- but we have also included some very early performance numbers from Fedora 13.

I know that Debian does its thing the Debian way, but I'd like to at least see a definite period of support for the project's releases. That means I don't care when they come out; it doesn't have to be every six months or even every year. But I'd like to see the project pledge to support Etch for five years, regardless of when the next Debian release achieves Stable status. In other words, I'd like to see Debian treat itself a little more like the"enterprise" Linux releases from Red Hat and Novell -- and like Ubuntu -- by taking the guesswork out of how long distributions will receive support.

Debian Etch on The Self-Reliant Thin Client

I'm running what I call The Self-Reliant Thin Client on Debian Etch, a GNU/Linux distribution I haven't run intensively in quite some time. I also recently installed the PowerPC build of Etch on my Power Macintosh G4/466, but I've been using the converted thin client almost exclusively since I built it last week using an 8 GB Compact Flash module as the system's sole hard drive.

Every Linux distributor must find its own peace when it comes to the issue of proprietary software. Some distributors will avoid anything non-free to the point of tearing firmware out of the kernel. Others, like Fedora or Debian, will not include any non-free code. Distributors like Ubuntu are rather more willing to facilitate the use of non-free software, but even they are, perhaps, not 100% comfortable with it. And distributions like Xandros positively embrace proprietary code.
