K9Copy helps make DVD backups easy

08/23/2008  IIIIIIIIII
Relevance: 9.07
Piracy notwithstanding, there are some good, valid reasons for making a backup of a DVD. K9Copy, a utility for copying DVDs, receives high marks in many forums, so I took it for a spin -- and found out its reputation is deserved. When I travel, I like to view movies on my laptop, but I'm not too keen on taking the original DVDs along; I prefer downloading them to the hard disk and keeping the originals at home. Also, if you have small kids, you know that DVDs probably won't be treated well, so making a backup copy makes good sense. Note, however, that laws differ in each country, and even such fair use might be prohibited where you live.

Tutorial: How to Write a Tutorial

08/01/2008  IIIIII
Relevance: 5.27
There actually are many fine articles on how to write tutorials on the web and particularly on those related to image editors such as Photoshop, but I thought it was time for one aimed at the beginner who wants to learn how to write a tutorial, particularly using GIMP. The writing in and of itself, is a skill set that takes time to master. It's not enough to have the desire to help others and it's not enough to know the subject you want to teach. The trick is being able to communicate to your audience in a way that will help them understand, learn, and then apply what they've learned to expand their own skill sets.

This tutorial shows how to set up Zimbra Collaboration Suite - Open Source Edition on CentOS. This tutorial covers installation of CentOS, dependencies for ZCS and setup of Split DNS when working behind a firewall. This tutorial is based on the way I set this server up and is only a suggestion. It carries no guarantees and it is highly suggested that you do this on a test server first to verify functionality. If you don't have a test server available you should download VMWare Server 1.0 and perform this tutorial on a test virtual server.

This tutorial is the second in a two-part series on locking your Linux machines down to streamline the associated support and administration processes. In this tutorial, you learn how to configure the Linux kernel to execute only signed binaries. This tutorial expands on the groundwork laid in Part 1, which gave some good reasons for keeping Linux's propensity for customization under control and took the first cautious steps toward locking down a standard Linux distribution to prevent spurious user changes to the baseline installation.
