Lenovo says it will supply Linux in NZ pre-installed

Our story last week about the paucity of Linux pre-installed machines available in New Zealand hit a nerve and elicited a flurry of comments from readers. But it seems that's not exactly the case. Lenovo's Australian and New Zealand communications head Heather Jones contacted m-net to straighten out our misunderstanding. She said that the new T61p ThinkPad will be available in New Zealand with Linux, but only if it is requested.

A Microsoft Slur in the OOXML Saga -- Did I Tell You or Did I Tell You? - Updated

Remember I told you I've noticed that people who don't support Microsoft's agenda end up the victim of smear campaigns? The New Zealand Open Source Society is reporting that an employee at Microsoft recently sent an email to one of the technical bodies advising an NB involved in the OOXML ISO process, smearing a man's reputation, Matthew Holloway, apparently to undermine his technical input which was critical of OOXML. Standards New Zealand was took the claims so seriously that they responded to parties who received this email. The New Zealand Open Source Society has all the gruesome details, and the reason I'm highlighting it here, aside from wanting to help undo a wrong, is because NZOSS request that if the slur, or others like it, has spread to other NBs or advisory bodies that you please direct them to the defense of Mr. Holloway's good name and reputation by Standards New Zealand on that page.

NZ government wins open source award

The New Zealand State Services Commission's (SSC) championing of open-source software in government helped its ICT (Information and Communications Technology) branch pick up an award in the government category of the inaugural New Zealand Open Source Awards, held in Wellington this month. The SSC has developed and published guidelines to government agencies that are considering open source, says the deputy commissioner and head of the ICT branch, Laurence Millar. The guidelines were published on the e-government website in 2003 and then updated, he says.

MIT's ‘$100 laptops' to go to Pacific islands

A small group of internet activists from New Zealand, Australia the Solomon Islands and the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) plan to take the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) initiative to the Pacific islands. A local not-for-profit, to be called OLPC Oceania, is planned but is yet to be formally constituted, says Ian Thomson, the New Zealand member of the initiative, best known for his work with the 2020 Communications Trust. OLPC Oceania plans two programmes: first, a pilot deployment of 20 machines, to be given to Solomon Islands children to supplement their regular education. A second more ambitious project aims to deploy 100,000 of the laptops throughout a number of the Pacific islands.
