Wrestling with Xubuntu Feisty

04/24/2007  II
Relevance: 10.61
I spent the day upgrading my new Xubuntu 6.10 (Edgy) installation to Xubuntu 7.04 (Feisty), and since Xubuntu is derived from Ubuntu, far and away the most popular Linux distribution for the desktop, I expected -- and still expect -- a lot more from it.

Xubuntu and Ubuntu 8.04 LTSâ€' Day 3

11/16/2008  II
Relevance: 10.24
It would be a strange thing indeed if Xubuntu ended up running better on my Gateway Solo 1450 than the flagship Ubuntu distro. While I've had luck with Xubuntu in the past (I think my favorite version was 7.04), regular Ubuntu always seemed to be more polished and stable than Xubuntu or Kubuntu. Until now.

Getting Xubuntu Feisty to bend to my will

04/26/2007  I
Relevance: 9.01
I made some progress -- and some discoveries -- today with my Xubuntu 7.04 Feisty installation on the Maxspeed Maxterm thin client. First of all, can we all agree that the GIMP, in its heaviness, doesn't really fit in with the Xubuntu philosophy of lighter apps for a lighter window manager?

You can't get Gutsy with only 602 MB of free disk space

I figured I would try to upgrade my Xubuntu 7.04 Feisty setup on the converted Maxspeed Maxterm thin client to Gutsy 7.10. It's no secret that Xubuntu has, in its short life (6.06 was its first release, I believe) never been as polished -- nor has it received as much polishing attention -- as the flagship Ubuntu. But for older hardware, Xubuntu can mean the difference between a good 'Buntu experience and the other kind.

Xubuntu 8.04 (Hardy Heron) Screenshots Tour. Xubuntu is a complete GNU/Linux based operating system with an Ubuntu base. It is lighter on system requirements and tends to be more efficient than Ubuntu with GNOME or KDE, since it uses the Xfce Desktop environment, which makes it ideal for old or low-end machines, thin-client networks, or for those who would like to get more performance out of their hardware.

How To Crash and Break Xfce4 In Xubuntu Edgy

While I stand by my glowing review of Xubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft), I have yet to find any release of any Linux distribution which was free of bugs or quirky behavior. The latest releases of the Ubuntu family of distributions are no different.

Xubuntu Gutsy Tribe 5 -- first impressions

08/31/2007  III
Relevance: 7.49
I downloaded and burned the Xubuntu Gutsy Tribe 5 live CD and loaded it up. I realize that this is beta and not all the bugs are worked out, and with that criterion, things are working very well. But I'm left wondering"Why?"
