09/01/2006 Relevance: 4.48No it is not Windows. It does look and feel like Windows, but this baby is Free Software, an operating system called React OS. Why does it look like Windows? Because React OS is a project of developing a Microsoft Windows compatible operating system. It is supposed to run programs and even drivers meant for Windows and it is supposed to look like Windows so that former Windows users can ease right into it without feeling that scary feeling: the difference.Search further
05/12/2007 Relevance: 4.39When was the last time you installed Windows NT 4.0? If your answer is"never," I believe you. If you've done it countless times, do I have your sympathy? I need it. My most recent major Windows upgrade (chronicled on my This Old PC blog) was taking a Win 98se box to Windows 2000. For those who think Windows has some kind of compatibility advantage over Linux, let me recount how in Windows 98 I didn't have a prayer of getting my cheap Airlink 101 wireless card to work, USB was spotty, and the thing was painfully slow to boot and to run.Search further

09/26/2007 Relevance: 4.27Windows Addiction is an unperceived phenomenon which has gotten a hold of us, and we get upset when we don't do Windows anymore. But what is the Windows Addiction? I think there is no proper working definition for it as yet but I feel it is an obsessive compulsive use of the Windows Operating System despite the fact the we don't want to use it anymore and we feel miserable using it but we can't stopusing it due to various fears, false beliefs and myths. Now what is so bad about Microsoft Windows and if one is hooked on using them in an obsessively compulsive manor?Search further
11/02/2008 Relevance: 4.23Linux has been making inroads into PC sales lately because it runs so well on lightweight netbooks with limited RAM and processing power. Windows 7, though, appears to run well on lightweight hardware as well, which could mean that it's Microsoft's Linux killer. At the recent PDC, where Windows 7 was unveiled, Windows and Windows Live senior vice president Steve Sinofsky claimed that Windows 7 used less than half of the 1 GB of RAM on his Lenovo S10 netbook. Making the new operating system lightweight has clearly been Microsoft's goal. In addition to light RAM use, Windows also strips out a variety of applications, including Windows Mail, among others.Search further
12/08/2006 Relevance: 4.23The discovery of ReactOS was a discovery of pure accident. On the surface, this seemingly replicated Windows-like operating system is ripe with fantastic possibilities. Seriously, when we consider the ability to run Windows applications in a Windows-like environment, we feel that the user can finally be free of Windows... sort of.Search further
04/29/2008 Relevance: 4.16As thousands -- perhaps millions -- of users seek to avoid Windows Vista, a new myth about Windows XP is emerging. But the myth, much like Windows itself, is full of holes. Here's the scoop from The VAR Guy.Search further
07/05/2008 Relevance: 4.11This is just a rant (hopefully it will be regarded as pertinent and non-'laming') on why Windows users try Linux and return frustrated to Windows after several hours or days. I won't praise Linux and the way it works, I won't even compare and say 'here Linux is easier because ...', instead I have a few questions for all of you who blame Linux for not being and behaving like Windows.Search further
07/01/2008 Relevance: 4.08According to Microsoft, Windows XP died on June 30th when it stopped sending it to the likes of Dell and HP, as well as ceasing shrink-wrapped distribution. According to Dell, new buyers can take a 'Windows Vista Bonus' machine: a PC with a copy of Windows XP pre-installed instead...Search further
07/13/2008 Relevance: 4.08Windows Vista debuted to muffled applause, followed by lackluster sales. Up until June 30, cash-strapped businesses looking to avoid the cost of upgrading to new Vista-compatible hardware could still purchase trusty Windows XP. Now, however, Windows XP is available only as a costly"downgrade" from Windows Vista--if you buy a copy of Vista, you can install the 6-year-old XP operating system using the Vista license.Search further
