Virtio: An I/O virtualization framework for Linux

02/06/2010  IIIIIIIIII
Relevance: 7.93
The Linux kernel supports a variety of virtualization schemes, and that's likely to grow as virtualization advances and new schemes are discovered (for example, lguest). But with all these virtualization schemes running on top of Linux, how do they exploit the underlying kernel for I/O virtualization? The answer is virtio, which provides an efficient abstraction for hypervisors and a common set of I/O virtualization drivers. Discover virtio, and learn why Linux will soon be the hypervisor of choice.

Red Hat Fedora 12 Introducing'Immense Changes' to Linux Virtualization

11/13/2009  IIIII
Relevance: 7.52
"There is an immense number of virtualization improvements and features in this release," Fedora Project Leader Paul Frields told InternetNews.com."These things will affect anyone using virtualization across the board." Virtualization has been a big push this year for Linux vendor Red Hat (NYSE: RHT). It's also a big area of focus for the Red Hat-sponsored Fedora Linux 12 release, which is due out next week. The Fedora Linux distribution has been including virtualization technologies beginning with the Fedora Core 5 release in 2006 and has been steadily adding new virtualization features ever since. In Fedora 12, the open source Linux community project is adding new technology to improve virtualization memory management and performance.

Virtualization Options for the Linux Desktop

02/17/2009  IIIII
Relevance: 7.42
Virtualization on the server is being hyped until we're sick of hearing about it. But virtualization on the desktop is very useful for a lot of different uses: development, making screenshots for howtos, testing, having access to applications without rebooting, and many more. Matt Hartley compares VMWare, VirtualBox, Parallels, and several other virtualization candidates, and their fitness for the desktop user.

Kernel-based Virtual Machine (KVM) is a Linux kernel virtualization infrastructure. KVM is a full virtualization solution for Linux on x86 hardware containing virtualization extensions Intel VT (vmx) or AMD-V (svm). It consists of a loadable kernel module, kvm.ko, that provides the core virtualization infrastructure and a processor specific module, kvm-intel.ko or kvm-amd.ko. KVM also requires a modified QEMU although work is underway to get the required changes upstream.

Virtualization begins to materialize in the Linux kernel

01/10/2007  IIIII
Relevance: 7.31
Virtualization, the ability to run multiple"virtual" systems on a single host, is nearly as old as solid state computing. But it's been all the rage again in recent years, with more than a dozen large-scale Linux virtualization projects -- and while they require special custom kernels, patches, and software, the first steps toward OS-level virtualization have been implemented in the Linux kernel.

Intel boosts hardware-based Linux virtualization

01/17/2007  IIII
Relevance: 7.28
With Intel Corp. processors supporting the company's Virtualization Technology (VT) becoming more pervasive, Linux kernel developers are writing the code to improve hardware virtualization and hence performance. Speaking at this year's linux.conf.au Linux and open-source conference in Sydney, Intel software engineer Jeff Dike spoke about three virtualization methods -- User-Mode Linux (UML), Kernel Virtual Machine (KVM) and hardware virtualization.
