openSUSE is one of the most popular free-software-only distributions, and it's jointly developed by Novell and members of the community. In the first week of November the openSUSE developers released installable live versions of the distro's latest 10.3 release, one each for KDE and GNOME desktop environments. The live versions are replicas of their install-only cousins in terms of software, and apart from a few quirks, they seem set to replace the older versions soon.

While OpenOffice.org allows you to save multiple versions of a document, that feature has a few drawbacks that limit its usefulness. For starters, saving all versions in the same file equals putting all your eggs in one basket. More importantly, this approach makes it difficult to share versions with other users and let them keep track of changes made to a document. One alternative, a full-blown version tracking system or a dedicated document management solution, is overkill if you only need a simple way to keep tabs on document versions and allow other users to keep track of them. A compromise solution uses OpenOffice.org to maintain an RSS feed of document changes.

We had used two versions of Futuremark's 3DMark suite for testing, and with that we had found the performance to be stable in some cases while in later WINE releases we had found some performance losses. With the WINE project on a consistent two-week release cycle, we are looking at the WINE 3D performance and this time going back with the past eleven releases.

One of the great things about Amazon and other online shopping services is that they usually list items for pre-order months before they're actually released. This allows your anticipation for the product to build more and more until your wait is justified with the release of the item that you've been in expectation of.[Let me get this straight. 5 versions of Windows Vista will confuse consumers because they're too lazy (your description here) to read the feature label, but they can choose from at least 20 different mainstream versions of GNU/Linux? It must be Microsoft's marketing prowess. Does this mean we're better at helping newcomers figure out which distro to choose? Anyway, I don't disagree about the price tag - along with other issues - driving folks to GNU/Linux. - dcparris]

New CNR.com is a work in progress

Last year, Linspire announced that it was opening its software distribution service, CNR (short for Click 'n' Run), to users of the Debian, Fedora, openSUSE, and Ubuntu distributions. A month ago, it announced a beta version of CNR that includes support for Ubuntu 7.04 and 7.10 (the two most recent versions), with versions for the other systems on the way. Alas, after trying it on my Ubuntu system, I think it needs work.

Trolltech has issued new patch releases of all current versions of Qt. Versions 3.3.7, 4.1.5 and 4.2.1 fix a security flaw which can be triggered by transforming specially-prepared pixmaps. It is a recommended update, although no real-world security issues exploiting these flaws have been recorded so far. Distributions are also releasing updated packages, note that distributions may release security-patched updates without changing the Qt version number.

VLC gets a new look on Windows and Linux

After two years in development, VLC, the universal media player, has moved from the 0.8.x versions to version 0.9.2. The release, named"Grishenko", is available for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and other operating systems, is available to download from the Videolan web site. The most visible new feature in the Windows and Linux versions is a new user interface. The new interface uses Qt4, replacing the previous wxWidgets-based interface as the default interface and allowing for better internationalisation and a richer set of graphical controls.
