Slackware: Secure all the way back to 8.1

Slackware provides security updates all the way back to version 8.1 along with 9.0, 9.1, 10.0, 10.1, 10.2, 11.0 and 12.0, so if there is a reason you're using an older version of Slack, it is still being supported by the distro's creator, Patrick Volkerding and his team. ... Slackware is still supporting version 8.1 a full five years after its release. That's the kind of commitment I like to see for a distribution. If you want to install it, you won't be left out in the cold if you want to stay with an older version that does what you want it to do.

Version Control as a Backup Tool

It was not intentional, but my later work on OpenSourceToday evolved where I copied up files directly from the version control onto the server. Moreover, I started making quick fixes directly on the version control copy (local) and then loading it onto the server. That cycle, my loading, my testing and my correcting code continued until I had acceptable functionality. Despite my having a poor fit between the site and the version control directory structure, I abandoned old habits. I believe that implies a natural existing advantage, hence, I found myself relying increasingly upon the version control copy.

PCLinuxOS 2008: And we have another winner!

I waxed poetic about PCLinuxOS 2007 a few months ago when I compared it to Mint (and even earlier about version 0.93a). After 8 months, Texstar and the"Ripper Gang" are in the process of releasing another version (about time...). The new version, PCLinuxOS 2008, will ship with KDE 4, but at the time of writing, the final isn't out yet. They recently released a so-called"MiniMe" version of the final product with KDE 3.5, and it's better than ever- to the point that I would actually use it.

Upgrading to Slackware 12.1

Pat Volkerding and the Slackware team released the latest version of Slackware Linux, 12.1, on May 2. Even though it is a"point one" release, the list of new features reads like what other distributions would consider a major new version. Slackware 12.1 features the latest KDE 3.5.9, Xfce 4.4.2, and a number of improvements, especially to udev. The full list of updated features is in the official product announcement. From a user's perspective, version 12.1 is a true refinement of the previous version.

The X.org community has been working out the last of the bugs since their code-base became semi-frozen on August 1st (which they refer to as"Code Slush") and are now confident that the release will be worth the wait. The so-called killer feature of this version of X is the new support for hotplugging of input devices (such as keyboard, mice, touchscreens) as well as output devices (monitors, projectors, and so forth).
