Open-source vendors seek help from Congress

11/11/2006  II
Relevance: 6.20
Open-source software vendors are prodding Congress to define some legal standards to support the development and deployment of such software. The vendors, which have formed the nonprofit Open Source Initiative (OSI), are most concerned about the legal definition of open-source software. Traditionally, such vendors provide full access to the source code of their applications, allowing others to study, change and redistribute the software on their own.

The Business of Free Software: Enterprise Incentives, Investment ...

12/20/2006  IIIIII
Relevance: 5.80
In this paper, we examine the motivations of large information technology vendors, to invest in open source software. What drives companies with large, proprietary software portfolios to invest hundreds of millions of dollars in OSS? We approach this question by grouping a sample of OSS projects into clusters and examining vendors' motivations for each cluster. We find one cluster has received almost no investment. Contributions to projects in this cluster are confined to the voluntary effort of the vendors' employees, and vendors are likely altruistically motivated. By contrast, the other cluster has received over 99% of vendor investments.

Can we relate?

12/31/2006  IIIIIIIII
Relevance: 5.44
Imagine being able torelate to vendors -- productively, on mutually agreeable terms -- rather than just paying them money for whatever they're selling, and occasionally giving them"feedback" through surveys that aggregate our"input" inside some impersonal"customer relationship management" (CRM) system. That's the idea behind VRM, or Vendor Relationship Management. It's the reciprocal of CRM: a toolset for independence and engagement. That is, of independencefrom vendors and engagementwith vendors.VRM is also a development effort --ProjectVRM -- that we've started at theBerkman Center for Internet and Society. There are no VRM tools yet, so we're starting with a blank slate. We've begun filling that in with a wiki and a mailing list, both open. Find them throughProjectVRM.org.

Q3 Results in Less VC Funding for Open Source Vendors

10/20/2008  III
Relevance: 5.25
The 451 Group is reporting that venture capital funding for open source vendors was down 12.2% last quarter, compared to Q3 2007. They say that while this is a larger drop than seen in the overall market, it's not quite as dire as it may seem at first glance.

Open options for cloud computing

08/20/2008  IIIIIII
Relevance: 5.17
Some cloud computing vendors, such as 3tera and Nirvani, push their own proprietary platforms and tools, which forces adopters to limit their options and work in a restricted or closed architecture. When these established vendors say cloud, they mean their cloud. As a result, Web developers may believe that, in order to use cloud computing, they must accept limitations in the way they write and build their applications. But that view is a misconception; open standards for cloud computing are already in place and are being tweaked. This does not mean that a single cloud computing platform is universally available. But just as some vendors have developed their own proprietary platforms for working in the clouds, so have various open source companies and communities.

Commercial vs. roll-your-own embedded Linux discussed

07/29/2008  III
Relevance: 4.99
A panel of embedded Linux specialists will discuss the pros and cons of commercial vs. do-it-yourself (DIY) embedded Linux implementations, at next week’s LinuxWorld conference. The session is part of the conference’s Mobile and Embedded Linux track. Moderated by DeviceGuru.com blogger Rick Lehrbaum, the hour-long session will explore the advantages and disadvantages of using embedded Linux distributions and tools from vendors such as MontaVista, Wind River, TimeSys. This approach will be contrasted with the alternative of creating customized embedded Linux platforms based on freely downloadable source code from silicon vendors, board vendors, or community repositories such as kernel.org or the Ubuntu or Fedora projects.

Mysql IPO, Oracle Unbreakable Support For MySQL?

02/02/2007  III
Relevance: 4.89
When MySQL files for IPO, we'll get to view their financials. We'll get to compare their performance metrics against Red Hat (which, until now, has been the only pure-play OSS player with public financials) and traditional vendors. I'm willing to bet that their metrics will be (surprisingly) close to metrics from traditional software vendors.
