Unix: Standardization Efforts Aren't Dead

12/05/2006  II
Relevance: 6.30
Unix standardization efforts are ongoing. No that's not a misprint. Unix is far from dead, and efforts to provide a degree of standardization for the remaining Unix players may well be a lifeline. Then again, according to at least one analyst, new Unix standards, though important, may not necessarily be everything.

SCO's KIA, but what about the rest of the troopers?

When Judge Kimball ruled against SCO in favor of Novel and said that Novell owned Unix's IP (intellectual property), that was the end of SCO. So now, SCO's legal cases are dead -- but what about its friends and partners? I've said since the beginning that there was next to nothing to SCO's claims that Unix IP had illegally been transferred into Unix. After all, SCO itself had incorporated Linux code into Unix. I thought the APA (Asset Purchase Agreement), which gave SCO the right to sell Unix but didn't give the company the IP rights to Unix, would prove SCO's case's Achilles' heel.

Embracing Unix and Linux Desktops

Unix and Linux clients can do quite well on a Windows network. Microsoft, in fact, released its own Services for Unix, which provides some basic cross-compatibility features for Unix clients accessing Windows servers. Other, more robust interoperability solutions are also available for various network services. Fortunately, Unix has been using TCP/IP for longer than Windows, so the two operating systems at least have a networking protocol in common.

Aren't UNIX and Linux the same thing? Yes and no.

The 'What's the difference between UNIX and Linux?' question can be answered similar to the analogy section that many of us had to complete on the SAT test;UNIX is to DOS as Linux is to Windows. That's a grossly oversimplified answer to a complex question and I'll no doubt get flamed by some of the more advanced UNIX and/or Linux users out there but in the interest of keeping things simple, let's go with the above italicized sentence.

Is SCO finally dead?

Even though SCO has suffered another legal defeat, the company looks like it has enough willpower, if not sense, to keep its legal losing streak going. On July 16th, Judge Dale Kimball ruled in favor of Novell in SCO vs. Novell and said that the maverick Unix company owed Novell $2.5-million for its Unix deals, and, oh, by the way, Novell, not SCO, really owns Unix. With no IP rights to Unix, it would appear that SCO's lawsuits against IBM, Novell, and Linux were done. Alas, the experts say"no."

Detailed and proper documentation of source code and programs is the milestone of Unix culture, as we may read in 'The art of Unix Programming' by Eric Steven Raymond. The first application on Unix was the platform to prepare documents. The platform was used by Bell Labs to prepare patent documents. Effective work with documentation and searching for needed information is the key feature when working on unix-like systems.
