Ulteo Alpha 1 Screenshot Walkthrough

12/08/2006  IIII
Relevance: 11.00
Here is the first public version of Ulteo! Its codename is 'Sirius' because we want to make it a star. This installable live CD is based on Debian and Ubuntu packages. It's installed on the hard-drive using"Yuch". A daemon, called UGD (Ulteo General Daemon), is always connecting to Ulteo servers to see if a newer, more up to date system is available. It can then upgrade to this new system.

Interview: MandrakeLinux and Ulteo founder Gael Duval

09/25/2006  IIIIIII
Relevance: 9.86
Gaël Duval, the founder of the popular MandrakeLinux (later MandrivaLinux) project, was fired from Mandriva last spring in an effort to cut costs. Almost immediately afterward, Duval began work on a new GNU/Linux distribution, Ulteo. As of this writing, Ulteo has not yet released its first beta edition, but it should be available soon. While we're all waiting, I figured I'd ask Mr. Duval some questions about Ulteo, Mandriva, and starting GNU/Linux projects in general. Answers are below.

Ulteo Application System is innovative, easy, and a little buggy

08/23/2008  III
Relevance: 9.46
Ulteo Application System is a GNU/Linux distribution based on Kubuntu and designed to work with the Ulteo Online Desktop service to provide you with an automatic offsite backup and file synchronization between live CD instances. It attempts to require as little user configuration and maintenance as possible, and provides several unique features that set it apart from being"just another distribution." On my test machine, a Sempron 2800 with 512MB of memory, Ulteo took almost three minutes to boot from the live CD -- quite a bit longer than most live CDs take on this system. Ulteo made up for this, however, when copying files during the installation -- that took a mere five minutes. There was little user intervention required during the installation besides selection of a username and password and my location, although I chose to partition my disk manually instead of allowing the installer to do it.

12/30/2007  II
Relevance: 9.20
Wings.. This is what Ulteo is offering to OOo. Ulteo will allow users to use OpenOffice desktop suite on line with no installation process required. May be it will give some lazy and curious users an opportunity to give it a try. It will also allow people who were making some economies to buy a MS office suite to give OOo a try and may be they will be convinced to download OOo.

First look at Ulteo Desktop

01/31/2008  IIIIIIIII
Relevance: 8.65
Using VNC to remotely access your desktop, applications, and documents sounds like a great solution when you are out and about, but it has a few significant drawbacks: you have to leave your machine turned on, the VNC protocol is not secure, and often you need a dedicated VNC client to access your desktop. Ulteo, the company started by Gaël Duval of Mandriva fame, is set to offer an alternative solution. Ulteo gives you access to a full-fledged KDE desktop hosted on the company's own servers while taking care of the behind-the-scenes stuff. While the service is still in beta and by invitation only, I had a chance to take it for a spin, and I found it promising.
