Hiper Type-M 780W

Back in 2005 we had looked at the Hiper Type-R Modular 580W power supply. This was a unique power supply that had a modular cable design and had performed very well. Even the Type-R's packaging was unique, with the power supply arriving in a plastic toolbox. We haven't looked at a Hiper power supply now in almost three years, but today we are looking at the Type-M 780W from Hiper Group. This power supply is dual-GPU ready (including compatibility with PCI-E 8-pin connectors), utilizes active PFC, and has four +12V rails.

WordPress may be winning the war, but Movable Type is getting back into the game

I've blogged a bit recently on how hard it is to install Movable Type and have it actually work on your own server. After getting and configuring Apache and MySQL (or PostgreSQL or SQlite), making sure you get the static files in the right place and the CGI/Perl files in the other right place, then making sure everything has the proper permissions ... I found it to be way beyond my capabilities. To be fair, I haven't yet tried to install WordPress, but I recently found out something very interesting: There are WordPress packages available in many of the major Linux and BSD distributions, including Debian, Ubuntu and even OpenBSD. Luckily, the same thing is now happening for Movable Type. So if you're using the Debian GNU/Linux distribution -- and I strongly suggest you do -- you can now install Movable Type as a Debian package.

Top 4 Browsers for Linux Reviewed

06/16/2008  IIIIIII
Relevance: 6.14
In the past, I have discussed the various browsers out there for us to enjoy at length. Despite this, there has always been the question as to which one was best for which type of person. After all, we all know what each offers, but which one best fits different type of users? In this article, I hope to better answer that particular question. And of course, all platforms will be considered, not just Linux.

Tip: Faster, Better Search for Movable Type

10/13/2006  IIII
Relevance: 6.13
Out of the box Movable Type’s (MT) search engine isn’t terrible. It meets minimum requirements, is fairly accurate, but not much more. The big issue is performance. Under any sort of load, MT’s native search starts to creak and groan, and suck gobs of CPU time.

Blogging with Movable Type 4.1

Relevance: 5.98
As the popularity of blogs continues to rise, blogging software platforms continue to evolve. With the recent release of version 4.1, the popular Movable Type application offers improvements that allow bloggers to expand their control over the publishing process. Movable Type is professional open source blogging software developed by Six Apart, written in Perl, and released under the GNU GPL. It requires a Linux, Apache, MySQL, and PHP/Perl (LAMP) server or an equivalent to run, and a mail server such as Sendmail or another SMTP-capable engine. The Apache server must be configured to execute CGI scripts. To start, you can try a functional online demo.

Damn Small Linux does Movable Type

05/27/2008  IIII
Relevance: 5.49
I can hardly believe that I'm composing an entry in Movable Type Open Source 4.1 using Damn Small Linux. Now that version 4.3 of the low-spec Linux distribution has added Firefox 2 to its software mix, I can use the browser -- here named Bon Echo for reasons that escape me -- for many more things than I could the Firefox 1.06 browser included in previous incarnations of DSL.

Tips and Tricks for Linux Admins: The State of the Tiny

01/25/2007  IIII
Relevance: 5.35
There is a distinct sub-culture in the Unix-type operating universe made up of gnarly old geekbeards who were raised up in the green-screen command-prompt era. They think X Window is for amateurs and any executable over 100K is bloatware. These are the wizened gurus who can touch-type 100 words per minute, remember every option for hundreds of commands, and who take pride at keeping antique hardware in service. Throw away an old 386 or 486? Never. Not when it makes a perfectly good firewall, printer server, Ethernet bridge, or network router.
