Keyboard-driven environments open a new window on the desktop

05/31/2007  II
Relevance: 6.11
If you use a traditional desktop like GNOME or KDE, a keyboard-controlled desktop with a minimum of utilities may seem like stepping back 10 or 15 years in the history of interface design. Why bother, when traditional desktops are easy to use and RAM and disk space are so cheap nowadays?

Mysql IPO, Oracle Unbreakable Support For MySQL?

02/02/2007  III
Relevance: 5.77
When MySQL files for IPO, we'll get to view their financials. We'll get to compare their performance metrics against Red Hat (which, until now, has been the only pure-play OSS player with public financials) and traditional vendors. I'm willing to bet that their metrics will be (surprisingly) close to metrics from traditional software vendors.

Its Time for a New Global Standards Organization

11/22/2007  II
Relevance: 5.46
The ongoing circus that is the OOXML adoption process in ISO/IEC JTC 1 has helped expose the cracks in the traditional process. Unfortunately, while the consortia that set most IT standards are independent of the traditional process for most purposes, they still have to return to gain the types of global certifications that some governments look for. Open source project challenges traditional storage

10/21/2006  IIIIIIIII
Relevance: 5.27
A number of open source storage projects have popped up in recent months, most with a focus on developing heterogeneous storage management software. But the latest open source group to make the scene is not aimed at building out the SMI-S specification or creating low-cost backup-and-recovery tools. Wolvix again

Relevance: 5.18
The combination of the Xfce and Fluxbox window managers, plus the excellent choice of apps (it has pretty much everything I use day to day) makes the Slackware 11-based Wolvix Cub and Hunter two of the best choices out thereâ€' for me anyway. Adding to Wolvix's flexibility, it can run as a live CD, or be installed in a traditional or"frugal" manner. I've chosen traditional installs, and the install process in Wolvix is excellent. It's easy to create as many partitions as you need, you get a choice of GRUB or LILO bootloaders, and once you do have it installed, slapt-get and Gslapt are ready to bring all the apps up to date from both the Wolvix and Slackware repositories.
