Rawstudio turns 1.0

he free software RAW photo converter Rawstudio released version 1.0 in April, marking the culmination of two years of work. This release carries on the Rawstudio tradition of providing a lightweight, dependable tool for photographers. Source code tarballs and binaries are available through the project's Web site. As of press time, pre-built packages are up for OpenSUSE and Ubuntu. In addition, Ubuntu users can access the 1.0 release and daily builds through Rawstudio's APT repository.

MySQL ends distribution of Enterprise source tarballs

MySQL quietly let slip that it would no longer be distributing the MySQL Enterprise Server source as a tarball, not quite a year after the company announced a split between its paid and free versions. While the Enterprise Server code is still under the GNU General Public License (GPL), MySQL is making it harder for non-customers to access the source code.

Normally the process is pretty quick and painless, but it still has some drawbacks, especially when it comes to upgrading or uninstalling that program. To help resolve this, we’ve got checkinstall, a useful tool that adds some cleverness to the process by keeping track of file changes and generating binary packages from your tarballs. With checkinstall, you can generate a RPM, deb, or Slackware package that can be ported between systems for easy install and removal.

Go creative with Gogh

Gogh is an extremely lightweight drawing program designed for pressure-sensitive devices. Despite its simplicity, it packs in a lot of features and a lot of fun. You can download Gogh packages from the project's Web site. The latest release is 0.1.2.1. Gogh is written in Python, and you can uncompress and run the source code tarballs from any place on your system -- no compilation or installation step required. You do need to have PyGTK, PyXML, and gnome-python installed. All are run-of-the-mill Python packages, though, so check your distribution's package management system.

GNOME 2.24 Excitement Begins Tomorrow

GNOME 2.22.0 was only released last month, but being released tomorrow is the first development release in the path towards GNOME 2.24.0. This first development release will be dubbed GNOME 2.23.1, with GNOME 2.23 being the unstable branch. The tarballs for this first release were due last night, with new versions of gnome-applets, mousetweaks, gnome-control-center, cheese, and other packages already being checked-in. All of the checked-in packages can be found on the gnome-announce-list.
