09/27/2008  II
Relevance: 4.23
This post is about the desktop operating systems that fly under the radar of most people. We are definitely not talking about Windows, Mac OS X or Linux, or even BSD or Solaris. There are much less mainstream options out there for the OS-curious. These alternative operating systems are usually developed either by enthusiasts or small companies (or both), and there are more of them than you might expect. There are even more than we have included in this article, though we think this is a good selection of the more interesting ones and we have focused specifically on desktop operating systems.

10/28/2008  III
Relevance: 4.23
Linux-Kongress 2008 attendees had the opportunity to hear two different sessions dedicated to organizations trying to improve the state of Linux support for embedded and mobile systems. They have similar goals, but are taking different approaches and have different levels of resources available to them. The first of these is OpenSourceEmbedded, presented by uClinux developer Jeff Dionne. He opened with a statement that, ten years ago, Linux-based embedded systems were nearly unknown. Now those systems are everywhere, with hundreds of millions of deployments. Embedded systems, he says, make up the largest installed base of Linux systems.

Dell customers demand Linux

02/20/2007  IIIIIIIII
Relevance: 3.84
Just a few days ago, Dell launched a site to solicit feedback from customers regarding what they most want to see coming from newer systems. Some of the various feature requests include stock multi-boot systems, an option to have no additional software installed aside from the OS, OpenOffice installations and – topping the list by a margin of 2 to 1 – pre-installed Linux. Whether it be with Ubuntu, Fedora Core, OpenSUSE or others, there are more than 20,000 requests for Dell to begin offering systems with Linux pre-installed by default. Clearly, demand for such systems are rising.

Zero Install: An executable critique of native package systems

02/16/2007  IIIIII
Relevance: 3.82
Zero Install is one of the more promising alternatives to native package systems for Linux distributions, such as RPM and Debian's dpkg. Originally developed by Thomas Leonard, a professor in the Department of Electronics and Computing at the University of Southampton, it begins with a criticism of existing package systems the difficulties of using them, and is built to provide an answer to the problems raised by the critique. However, like other alternative package systems, it faces the problems of winning acceptance from the major distributions and fine-tuning its features.
