One of the most often missed tools in Linux based operating systems today is a Grub configuration tool. In this review I'll have a look at Startup Manager, a nice GTK+ tool to configure grub and usplash. If you've ever configured grub or usplash by hand, you know there are a lot of options. Luckily, Startup Manager does a great job at keeping it's GUI nice and clean, fitting plenty of options in it's 4 tab interface.

Bootchart logs the entire startup process and produces a clean, graphical representation of its results suitable for everything from troubleshooting to good old-fashioned bragging rights. Bootchart is a common utility, so check your distribution's package management system first to see if it is available. If not, the Bootchart download page provides links to the official packages for Debian, Ubuntu, Gentoo, SUSE, and Mandriva. You can also download source code in an RPM or tarball from bootchart.org. The package contains installation and uninstallation scripts and compilation instructions.

Startup is counting on open source to launch its MMOG

Brazil-based Hoplon Infotainment is a startup game developer and an open source shop. Its upcoming first product, Taikodom, is a"massively multiplayer online game (MMOG)" that includes elements of science fiction and magic. Hundreds of thousands of online users can play an MMOG at the same time, but that requires a lot of server power. Hoplon called on open source tools for its software development needs, and IBM to help it provide the bandwidth and CPU strength it requires.

Former One Laptop CTO Mary Lou Jepsen On Her New Startup

But she hasn't gone far: the next gig for Jepsen, former CTO of Intel's display division, is Pixel Qi, a Hull, MA-based startup she has created to design and build components for low-cost information devices that could be sold to consumers right here in the United States, as well as to people in the developing world.
