Emerging consensus in favour of a unified document format standard?

08/16/2007  I
Relevance: 6.04
It's too early to say for certain, but there are very encouraging signs that the world's standards bodies will vote in favour of a single unified ISO (' International Standards Organisation' ) document format standard. There is already one document format standard - ODF, and currently the ISO is considering a proposal to bless an alternative, Microsoft's OpenXML, as another standard. In the latest developments, standards committees in South Africa and the United States have both said they will vote against a second standard and thereby issue a strong call for unity and a sensible, open, common standard for business documents in word processing, spreadsheets and presentations.

A cathedral of formats or a castle of cards?

"Microsoft's Open XML file format may perhaps be one day an OSI standard (who knows, so many things are OSI certified, one day Microsoft may be able to certify its own business practices as the ISO standard for monopolistic position and anti-competitive behaviour) but it will never be an open standard."

PDF now an ISO standard

07/06/2008  III
Relevance: 5.51
The Portable Document Format (PDF) is now an ISO International Standard: ISO 32000-1. The change in status follows a decision by Adobe Systems, original developer and copyright owner of the format, to relinquish control to ISO. The move means that the ISO is now in charge of publishing the specifications for the current version (1.7) and for updating and developing future versions. Despite impressions that PDF has beena proprietary format owned by Adobe, PDF has long been an open standard. The move to have PDF declared an ISO standard reinforces the open status of PDF.

Microsoft attacks IBM over ODF

05/13/2007  I
Relevance: 5.35
Microsoft has severely criticised IBM, saying the company is pushing the OpenDocument Format standard to the detriment of Microsoft's own Open XML standard.[It's a little aged by now, but readers should know MS is still trying to shove two non-interoperable standards down our throats. The world does NOT need two standards to keep translating, we need one standard we can all use. Please, Microsoft, get that through your thick skulls! - dcparris]
