Today, I read a short note in the latest (print issue) c't magazine about Singapore Airlines, who currently assemble Panasonic PCs into each seat of their new Airbus A380 fleet. All of the systems will run a Red Hat-based Linux variant on a VIA hardware, and screen sizes differ from 10.6″ in economy to 23″ in first class. The LiMo Foundation is making steady progress on its goal to make Linux a popular mobile operating system. At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, several key LiMo vendors including Motorola, Samsung, NEC and Panasonic announced as promised the first set of LiMo-compliant handsets while LG, Aplix and Purple Labs showed off prototypes and reference handsets. A total of 18 LiMo models were launched at the event, including six from Motorola, four from Panasonic and NEC and one from Samsung. These included Motorola's much anticipated RAZR V8 and V8 Luxury Edition and Samsung's SGH-i800.

Linux takes a seat on Qantas' new superjumbo jet

Linux will be a passenger in every seat on Qantas' Airbus A380s airplanes. All of the airline's superjumbos -- the first of which will commence flying next week -- will have their in-flight entertainment systems powered by the operating system. The A380 is the first Qantas aircraft to utilize the Panasonic eX2 Inflight Entertainment System (IFE). All of Panasonic's X Series of IFE systems run on Linux.

The LiMo Foundation, a mobile consortium that is building an open software platform for handsets based on Linux, added five new members and plans to launch its first release of its application shortly, according to officials. LiMo will announce Monday that Acrodea, ETRI, Huawei, Purple Labs and Trolltech are joining the consortium, which launched a year ago with founding members Motorola, NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic, Samsung and Vodafone.

The Linux-based eX2 in-flight entertainment system (IFE) from Panasonic Avionics was the big winner at this year's Avion Awards, sponsored by an IFE trade group. The Best Overall IFE awards went to Emirates, Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific Airways, all running variants of eX2. This Red Hat-based system also is installed on Qantas Airways and on Boeing 777s operated by Delta and Continental. eX2, the newest version of Panasonic's in-flight entertainment systems, offers not the canned radio stations of yesteryear, but rather audio and video on demand, games, and even online books, depending on the carrier.

Broadcom joins Linux Mobile Foundation

Fabless chip supplier Broadcom Corp. (Irvine, Calif.) has joined the LiMo (Linux Mobile) Foundation as an associate member. The group, originally formed by Motorola Inc., NEC, NTT DoCoMo, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. and Vodafone plc, is chartered with delivering a consistent open-source Linux software platform for mobile phones. Broadcom said Linux is gaining momentum in mobile phones and that it would work with LiMo Foundation members to address power consumption, size and cost, in an effort to achieve widespread adoption of Linux-based handsets.[If they only started making Linux drivers for their wireless cards...– Sander]
