10/26/2006  II
Relevance: 5.66
Citrix says it has no interest in delivering native Linux support in its products, and that it will continue to rely on the Windows platform. The company, which is a close partner of Microsoft, says there is no significant demand for Linux in the public and private sector.[Let me guess. They read one of those Microsoft-sponsored studies. 08/29/2007  IIII
Relevance: 5.49
For some time I have been looking for a good way to let my computer discover the Windows network and mount shares on demand. After trying the kioslaves in the desktop of my choice (KDE) and the FUSE programs Fusesmb and SmbNetFs, I was not really satisfied. There had to be a way to let my computer discover all the workgroups/domains, the hosts and the shares, and mount a share on a hosts on demand.

Relevance: 5.09

Some of the various feature requests include stock multi-boot systems, an option to have no additional software installed aside from the OS, OpenOffice installations and – topping the list by a margin of 2 to 1 – pre-installed Linux. Whether it be with Ubuntu, Fedora Core, OpenSUSE or others, there are more than 20,000 requests for Dell to begin offering systems with Linux pre-installed by default. Clearly, demand for such systems are rising.

A GNOME-based Desktop on Demand

04/16/2008  IIIII
Relevance: 5.08
Desktop on Demand (DOD) is the latest contender to give users a full-fledged remote desktop instead of Web-based applications to help users to stay productive when they are on the move. Similar to Ulteo (which we reviewed not long ago), DOD gives you a full-blown remote Linux-based desktop -- but that's where the similarity ends. Unlike Ulteo, which is based on the VNC protocol and runs entirely in the browser using a Java-based applet, DOD employs the NoMachine NX technology for accessing the remote desktop.

05/04/2008  II
Relevance: 4.92
Microsoft has decided to withdraw from its bid to buy Yahoo, with Steve Ballmer citing Yahoo's demand for US $37 per share as just too much– but is the deal really dead? It had been shaping up as the tech world's biggest ‘deal or no deal' of 2008 – a multi-billion dollar takeover offer of Yahoo by Microsoft. But in the end, Microsoft has said ‘no deal' and walked away, only willing to pay US $33 per share - itself a revised offer that added US $5 billion to Microsoft's original offer of US $31 per share, against Yahoo's demand for US $37 per share.

Computer makers push device builders for Linux-compatible hardware

05/03/2008  IIII
Relevance: 4.82
For years, device and peripheral builders could get away with ignoring the Linux desktop market. It was too small to matter, they would say. Things have changed. At the Linux Foundation meeting in Austin, Texas, last month, major PC vendors ASUS, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, and Lenovo said they would be telling their chipset, component, and peripheral OEMs (original equipment manufacturers) that they were going to demand Linux-compatible hardware from them. It's one thing when Linux users ask for support; it's an entirely different thing when multi-billion-dollar companies demand it. This is an offer that the OEMs can't refuse.
