OLPC XO-1

01/08/2008  IIIIII
Relevance: 8.64
I got an OLPC XO-1 a few days ago in the mail as part of the give one, get one program. Hopefully some child out there is enjoying their new laptop. We like hardware, and the OLPC XO-1 is an interesting piece of hardware. There are plenty of teardowns for the OLPC XO-1 (including one on the OLPC wiki itself), so I won't repeat the tedium of what screw comes out of where and just cut to what I thought were interesting highlights.

Is OLPC Putting a Band-Aid on a Gaping Wound?

03/22/2007  III
Relevance: 8.12
What does the sitcom"Seinfeld" have to do with One Laptop per Child (OLPC), the project aiming to distribute inexpensive notebook computers to the impoverished, third-world children? Not much, except for the fact that two critics of OLPC -- Linspire President and CEO Kevin Carmony and company Chairman Michael Robertson -- refer to an episode of the show when discussing OLPC. They say there are parallels between OLPC and the 1997 Seinfeld installment"The Muffin Tops."

OLPC having bad start to 2008

01/09/2008  IIIIIII
Relevance: 7.85
The calendar has switched over to 2008 and so far it has been anything but a happy new year for the One Laptop Per Child Project. First, OLPC Chief Technology Officer (and the first employee of the OLPC) Mary Lou Jepsen announced that she was stepping down as CTO in order to start a new company. Then we found out that a Nigerian company was suing the OLPC over a claimed patent violation. And then at the end of the week it was announced that Intel was stepping down from the board of the OLPC.

Windows XP Not Good for OLPC Peru

Relevance: 7.59
As reported by Gizmodo, Microsoft and OLPC just announced the first official pilot of XO laptops running Microsoft Windows. I am Lionel Laské, President and co-founder of OLPC France and to be honest it's not really a surprise. We hear from months that the agreement between OLPC and Microsoft will be a good way to win new country deployment.

OLPC: Virus Free

03/13/2008  I
Relevance: 7.52
Contrary to Sam Varghese, the OLPC is not a doomed effort, destined to spread computer viruses on a worldwide scale. I didn't intend for OLPC to become one of my favourite topics, I just happen to notice a lot going on about it in the press, and sadly a lot of it is just plain wrong.

The Political Hoopla Between Intel and OLPC

05/23/2007  IIIIIIII
Relevance: 7.50
From what I understand, the whole point of OLPC is to create awareness of technology in third world countries and empower the next generation with collaboration and other fun uses of technology and the way it can make an impact in a child's life. OLPC is a non-profit entity, and I admire its efforts. However, with the recent ongoings between Intel and Nicholas Negroponte, the founder of OLPC, I fail to understand the immature bickering between the two.

$175 OLPC deals blow to open source, guarantees Microsoft's continued dominance

04/27/2007  III
Relevance: 7.39
Yesterday Nicholas Negroponte, former director of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab now head of the nonprofit One Laptop Per Child project, gave analysts and journalists an update on the OLPC project. Two big changes were announced - the $100 OLPC is now the $175 OLPC, and it will be able to run Windows.[Like we didn't see this coming. Is there anything Microsoft can't do?, besides make a decent Operating System? - Scott]

OLPC makes its entry into India

11/08/2007  I
Relevance: 7.17
When the OLPC first made news, a prominent official in the HRD ministry of the Indian government had gone on record snubbing the OLPC project ($100 laptop), even making a preposterous claim that work was under way to create India's own $10 laptop. But as things have worked out, OLPC has already made an entry into India in the form of a pilot project in a rural primary school in a village in the state of Maharasthra.

The Lost Tribe of OLPC

07/11/2008  II
Relevance: 7.15
Once upon a time, long ago, there was someone from a faraway country in South America doing an advanced program at MIT in Boston, where he met with the soft-shell stage of the One Laptop Per Child project. This person eventually went back to his country, started meeting and inviting locals to learn about OLPC. He kept in touch and received a couple visits of now long, long gone and forgotten OLPC employees. Eventually he called his team the"Grupo OLPC (country name)".

OLPC XO ($100 Laptop) running Doom

11/30/2006  IIIIII
Relevance: 7.14
With so many North American's itching to get their hands on a OLPC $100 laptop, why not taunt the caged tigers with a little more meat. I found these videos from Christopher Blizzard's blog. Christopher helped develop the modified version of Fedora Core for the OLPC and Sugar GUI, so rest assured these videos of anOLPC XO running Doom are not fakes.
