Tired of Microsoft rattling the patent sabers against FOSS? Why not join Christian Einfeldt at the Digital Tipping Point and demand that Microsoft sue you first! Or to put it another way,"Hey, Microsoft, put up or shut up!"

Bringing down software margins with the cloud and open source

05/27/2008  IIIIII
Relevance: 4.26
Microsoft expects to lose margin as"cloud" competitors start to eat away at its core businesses. Kudos to Microsoft for calling out the obvious. But Microsoft still has a lot to learn if it thinks it can charge more under its own cloud model because"the customer will pay Microsoft a larger fee, since Microsoft also runs and maintains all the hardware,"

Why would I care about Microsoft?

08/20/2007  II

Whenever I mention in a crowd that I use free software, someone always seems to comment that I must hate Microsoft. When I add that I write about free software for a living, someone is apt to call me a Microsoft-basher. In either case, the implication seems to be that my identity is defined by Microsoft, and, perhaps, is composed of an unhealthy amount of envy. When I reply calmly that Microsoft is mostly irrelevant to me, the people who made these comments seem disbelieving, or at least disappointed. But why would I care about what Microsoft is doing, beyond a mild interest in news that doesn't particularly concern me?

Microsoft, Novell, and now Ubuntu join to boost Apple and Debian

You've read more than enough already about how Novell and Microsoft signed an agreement that's supposed to help Novell sell Linux to Microsoft customers and help Microsoft customers integrate Linux -- as long as it's Novell Linux -- into their IT environments without fear of patent lawsuits. Part of the yammer was an open letter from Novell's CEO claiming that deal didn't really mean what you thought it did, followed by a statement from Microsoft that said Novell's CEO didn't really mean to say what he said or was wrong about some of it. Or something. Then Mark Shuttleworth jumped into the mess by offering a new, Microsoft-free home for openSUSE developers who didn't want to truck with Novell any longer because of its Microsoft deal.

Microsoft starts a"Get the Facts" campaign...against itself

You've got to hand it to Microsoft. It hates ANYTHING and ANYONE that gets in its way of selling its software. Including, apparently, itself. In a very funny turn of events, Microsoft is out preaching to the industry that XP is a bloated expense hog, while svelte Vista will cure world hunger (or, at least, cost less). Anyway, Microsoft must really be hurting if it has to resort to beating up on its most stable product in years.

From the Dept. of Big Duh: But the kicker was he began to realize that Microsoft, whose senior VP of corporate development and strategy had promised that Microsoft would in some way guarantee the SCO investment, started showing signs it might not do that after all:"Mr. Emerson and I discussed a variety of investment structures wherein Microsoft would 'backstop,' or guarantee in some way, BayStar's investment.... Microsoft assured me that it would in some way guarantee BayStar's investment in SCO."[What's that saying about no honor among thieves....Tuxchick]

Microsoft Patent Deal With JVC May Cover Linux Use

01/19/2008  IIII
Relevance: 3.97
Microsoft said Tuesday that it struck a patent cross-licensing deal with Japanese electronics manufacturer JVC that includes net payments from JVC to Microsoft. Under the deal, both companies will exchange patent information related to the development and manufacturing of consumer products. More specific terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Microsoft, however, did say that the deal's balance of payments tilts in its direction."Microsoft is being compensated by JVC," Microsoft said in a statement. The statement has raised speculation that Microsoft may be charging JVC for its use of the Linux operating system in some of its products. Among other things, JVC uses Linux in its streaming video networking gear.

Novell and the Brave New Open-Source World

Relevance: 3.96
For some people, when Novell recently made a deal with Microsoft, they might as well have sold their soul to the devil. At the same time, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has been mouthing off about how Microsoft signed the pact because Linux"uses our intellectual property" and Microsoft wanted to"get the appropriate economic return for our shareholders from our innovation."
