Get your network's weather from Weathermap4RRD

09/12/2006  II
Relevance: 5.98
When I was investigating the Abilene/Internet2 network sometime back, I found its"network weather map," which graphically shows the load on network segments, to be an interesting tool. I thought something similar could be helpful on our network. Today, we're using Weathermap4RRD to show a high-level graphical representation of our network.

Calculating Subnets with"ipcalc"

Relevance: 5.88
Setting up a network can be fairly quick and easy if you're setting it up with straight Class A, Class B, or Class C network addresses. But, there may be occasions when you would only have a few hosts assigned to a given network segment. In that case, you wouldn't want to use a straight"classful" network addressing scheme, because you would waste too many IP addresses for that network. (You may need to use these IP addresses later if you decide to add other segments to your network.) This is where subnetting comes in handy.

Benchmarking network performance with Network Pipemeter, LMbench, and nuttcp

08/13/2008  I
Relevance: 5.32
Network latency and bandwidth are the two metrics most likely to be of interest when you benchmark a network. Even though most service and product advertising focuses on bandwidth, at times the latency can be a more important metric. Here's a look at three projects that include tools to test your network performance: nepim"network pipemeter," LMbench, and nuttcp. For this article I built each utility from source on a 64-bit Fedora 9 machine. I used nepim version 0.51, LMbench version 3, and nuttcp version 5.5.5.

Push and pull network filesystems with ccgfs

10/02/2008  IIIIIIIIII
Relevance: 5.24
The CC Network Filesystem (ccgfs) lets you mount filesystems over the network using either the push or pull model for connections. Most network filesystems use the pull model, where the client mounts a network share and all connections originate from the client. Using the push model for network shares means that all connections originate from the server. The push model has advantages when you want a machine on your network demilitarized zone (DMZ) to access a file server through a firewall.

Monitoring network performance with speedometer

06/25/2008  IIII
Relevance: 5.24
Speedometer shows a graph of your current and past network speed in your console, letting you see your network connection's up and downstream speed and history at a glance. You can also use speedometer directly on a file to monitor the download performance and history of a specific download instead of all network traffic. When displaying the total network traffic, speedometer is sort of like gkrellm, in that you can see the current and past network performance on a graph, but you can easily run it over an SSH connection without having to set up gkrellmd.
