Having spent the last few days really examining what Gutsy has to offer on the wireless front, I have been content with improvements made to the network-manager for GNOME. Having thoroughly tested my RT2500 and RT61 Ralink wireless cards, I was impressed with the new wireless stack and network-manager's ability to handle the wireless cards with zero hassle.

Zenoss builds a competitive advantage with open source infrastructure

In 2002, he began development of what would become Zenoss, an open source network monitoring product that runs on multiple platforms. Dahl found that the best way to deliver a product that is affordable and customizable is to use open source, and in the process he also discovered that using open source internally is the best way to build a successful business from scratch.

Func team puts network management back in sysadmins' control

They're pretty sure that once the rest of the community catches on to just how useful Func is, they'll be singing its praises too. When I was investigating the Abilene/Internet2 network sometime back, I found its"network weather map," which graphically shows the load on network segments, to be an interesting tool. I thought something similar could be helpful on our network. Today, we're using Weathermap4RRD to show a high-level graphical representation of our network.

Calculating Subnets with"ipcalc"

Setting up a network can be fairly quick and easy if you're setting it up with straight Class A, Class B, or Class C network addresses. But, there may be occasions when you would only have a few hosts assigned to a given network segment. In that case, you wouldn't want to use a straight"classful" network addressing scheme, because you would waste too many IP addresses for that network. (You may need to use these IP addresses later if you decide to add other segments to your network.) This is where subnetting comes in handy.
