A Better Office .docx Converter

12/08/2008  II
Relevance: 7.77
There's plenty of ways to convert Microsoft Office 2007 file formats (.docx, .xlsx, .pptx) to OpenOffice.org. Now OpenOffice.org 3.0 imports these Office OpenXML files natively, but natively doesn't mean a fluent translation. You can wait for OpenOffice 3 to mature, but there's another way for the impatient.

Getting around Windows Activation when Virtualizing

07/12/2007  II
Relevance: 6.94
When I first setup my VMware Server to run an existing Windows Install from a physical partition, I was asked to reactivate Windows XP before I could use it as a guest OS. I received a lot of complaints from people saying that they were then again asked to reactivate Windows again once they booted back into Windows natively, and then again under VMware and so on every time the OS was booted in a different environment. If you replace the WPA files prior to booting based on whether you're using VMware or booting natively you won't have to reactivate. Here's how to do it.

The Future of Apps: Cross Platform Compatibility

Relevance: 5.22
These days, virtualization options are a dime a dozen. VMware, Parallels, Win4Lin and so on. But what about running applications natively on a different platform from what they were originally designed for? Ah, now there is the real question: is their enough demand for this?

Catching Up With JOST

Three months ago I introduced my readers to a new system for hosting VST plugins compiled natively for Linux. Relevance: 4.76
Linux has always been the operating system of the geeks and nerds. For some reason Linux has never been able to capture the market like Windows and OS X have managed to do. The main reason for this has been the so called unfriendliness of the Linux OS. But things are changing now with distros like Ubuntu etc..

Ruby project yields to Microsoft

02/06/2008  IIII
Relevance: 4.52
A community driven project for Ruby source code to run natively on Microsoft's .NET framework has shut down, faced by progress from an official Microsoft effort. Rather than repeat the work on Microsoft's own IronRuby, Ruby.NET is closing its doors just three months after its latest milestone release, and following an initial wave of developer buzz,.

Democracy Player: A Superior Multimedia Alternative to iTunes on Linux

09/25/2006  IIIIIIII
Relevance: 4.48
Linux users have found their options limited, as iTunes is to this very day still not available on the Linux platform natively. Apple is foolish for ignoring this, but we believe that we have located a better alternative in the video podcast realm than what iTunes was offering anyway - Democracy Player.

Ubuntu: The Switch (6 of 6) - Conclusion

06/24/2007  IIIII
Relevance: 4.39
Now that the Vista to Ubuntu switch is complete and I have had some time to use Ubuntu in a productive environment... I can say that I love Ubunutu (I have had experience with Red Hat, Mandrake, Suse, QNX and Debian in the past)! Even running Windows XP under VMware is great. I was doing some Photoshop editing under VMware on some large files and it seemed faster than when I was running Photoshop natively on Vista.
