Setting mouse gestures with EasyStroke and Gestikk

Relevance: 10.16
For some reason, mouse gestures have never fully caught on with desktop users. Movements of the mouse that launch a command or simulate a combination of keys are ideal for those who prefer not to move their hands constantly between the mouse and the keyboard, or who have trouble typing because of some physical challenge. Yet many users have never heard of mouse gestures, and they are apparently so little in demand that, nine months after the KDE 4 releases began, KDE has yet to implement any of the software or settings that enabled mouse gestures in earlier versions of the desktop.

HOW-TO: Configuring Your Mouse To Work With All 5 Buttons

The problem I had was that the mouse (Logitech MX518 by the way), did not work as intended by the manufacturer. More specifically the back and forward buttons on my mouse didn't do what they should when I was browsing (in any browser). Ofcourse it works fine in Windows and I bought the mouse because I wanted a good gaming mouse, but since Linux (Fedora Core 5) is my main OS I wanted those buttons to work as expected.

Using mouse gestures across Linux

My first brush with mouse gestures on the Opera browser was an accident, but the ability to quickly move backward or forward in the browser history, open new windows, close tabs, and more without using the menus or moving the mouse toward the navigation toolbar won me over immediately. Nowadays, this feature is available in Firefox and Konqueror too, and you can even configure mouse gestures for GNOME and KDE desktop environments.

For Linux Lovers: The Penguin Mouse

A computer mouse is no longer a simple object as nowadays it may come in a variety of shapes and sizes, colors and tones, bigger and smaller and sporting exotic or more common features. Among the shapes that a computer mouse can take these days is the shape of a little happy penguin, looking especially for those Linux lovers out there. But, while this mouse is certainly cute and does not look half bad, I have to speak up my mind and say that it may be less than ergonomic or practical for that matter to the above average computer user.

When you have shelled out for a swanky mouse like the Logitech VX Nano, you want to make the most out of your investment, which means making its programmable buttons work. However, many Linux distributions recognize most mice as generic pointing devices, so none of the fancy extra buttons work right out of the box. The btnx utility can help you to turn your mouse into the versatile tool it is meant to be.

The mouse isn't the be-all end-all of the PC-to-human interface system. Before the mouse there was the keyboard, which is perfectly fine to use while searching the vast Internet--once you try a new search engine called visearch. Rob Reilly types away at the engine and interviews its creators within.

A good day for Ubuntu 8.04

After a few instances where the keyboard and mouse locked up in Ubuntu 8.04 on the $0 Laptop, I decided to write my weekly column for the Daily News' Tech Talk space entirely in Ubuntu. I've got about 10 Firefox windows open, I'm switching between them madly, doing searches, writing and generally beating the hell out of the keyboard and touchpad (I didn't connect the USB mouse today). No crashes, no freezes. Nothing but trouble-free computing.
