Freescale is possibly landing a major hit at the CES 2008 with their 'motherboard on-chip' processor, dubbed LimePC. We got a photo from I4U reader Jeff (Thanks!) showing the possibly called LimePC M1, which is apparently not bigger than an iPod nano. The LimePC features Graphics, Audio cards, PCI, Ethernet, SATA, USB motherboard is smaller than the Apple iPod nano. Just imagine a full Linux PC inside a iPod nano - I love to have one in my pocket!

Abit AB9 Linux/Solaris Compatibility

It was back in February that we originally looked at the AB9 motherboard from Abit; however, this P965 motherboard had a few problems that had prevented this motherboard from functioning well with Linux. But have things since improved for this motherboard? We now have our compatibility report for the Abit AB9 as we see if things have changed for the better or worse under Linux and Solaris.

We already reported about the LimePC yesterday, which is an iPod nano sized Linux UMPC based on Freescale's MPC5121e mobileGT processor, which is a so called"motherboard-on-a-chip" device. Freescale has now released a full press-release on their site and technical specifications for their highly integrated multi-core embedded computing platform.

Earlier this year we had looked at the ECS A780GM-A Black Series motherboard that was powered by AMD's 780G Chipset with SB700 Southbridge. This motherboard worked well with Linux and had received our approval, but since then AMD has introduced their 790GX Chipset with Radeon HD 3300 graphics and SB750 Southbridge. Elitegroup Computer Systems has introduced a new motherboard that relies upon these newest chips. The ECS A790GXM-A Black Series is this newest product and today we are looking at this motherboard at Phoronix.

Tyan Tempest i5400XT (Intel 5400)

When the Intel Quad-Core"Clovertown" Xeon processors were introduced in late 2006 we had reviewed (among other motherboards) the Tyan Tempest i5000XT (S2696) motherboard. We had found this i5000X-based motherboard to work incredibly well with Linux and it ended up being awarded with our Editor's Choice Award for its impressive feature-set, Linux compatibility, and top-notch performance. It has been a while since last looking at a Tyan motherboard, but with the emergence of Intel's Wolfdale and Harpertown processors requiring new motherboards, today we are looking at the Tempest i5400XT S5396 motherboard. The Tempest i5400XT is similar to the i5000XT, but it's been upgraded to the new Intel 5400 MCH.

The ASRock motherboard we have our hands on for this Linux and Solaris review is the ALiveNF7G-HDready, which combines NVIDIA's GeForce 7050 and nForce 630a MCP with a wealth of integrated extras such as IEEE-1394a Firewire to offer a rather good package for its low price. This motherboard is also capable of handling 720p H.264 video playback with low CPU Utilization and HDCP decoding -- with supported software.
