Will Software Businesses Really Move Toward the Middle in '08?

01/10/2008  I
Relevance: 5.66
Anne Zelenka recently predicted that software businesses will move from the extreme 'closed' and 'open' licensing models toward the center, what she refers to as 'clopen', or hybrid closed and open licensing models. I think she's missing something.

Tasty Tomato firmware for routers

06/12/2008  I
Relevance: 5.56
Breathe new functionality into your router with Tomato third-party firmware for popular models of Broadcom-based routers, including popular models manufactured by Linksys. Most consumers and users don't know the code for Linksys firmware is entirely open source and based on Linux. That allows developers to create customized firmware that extends the functionality of the router through a plethora of new features. Tomato provides a robust set of advanced features that outperform the default Linksys firmware, and rival other open source firmware such as DD-WRT in terms of functionality. Many different routers support Tomato, including models from Asus, Buffalo, and Linksys; a full compatibility listing can be found on Wikipedia or in the developer FAQ.

Linux PC Models Multiply As Vista Struggles

01/15/2008  IIIII
Relevance: 5.55
Until recently, Linux PCs were about as easy to find in stores as a vinyl record. Now, personal computers with the Linux operating system pre-installed are becoming more readily available, thanks to new models from upstarts and established PC makers -- and disappointment with Microsoft's new Windows Vista OS. In just the past several weeks, a handful of new, low-cost systems have hit the market that are powered by Linux -- open source software first developed by Linus Torvalds and enhanced by enthusiast programmers around the world.

$50 more for Linux Eee PC 900– what gives Asus?

05/09/2008  II
Relevance: 5.37
And there we were believing that we could trust a vendor like Asus. The line they've spun to journalists in Australia about the Linux Asus Eee PC 900 being $50 more than the Windows version because it has more storage is a load of bull. Overseas, both models are the same price! Just for background, two days ago Asustek Australia announced the Eee PC 900 (the one with the 8.9 inch screen) would go on sale at the end of May with both Linux and Windows XP Home models. The Linux version would retail for AUD$649, while the Windows version would sell for AUD$599.

Ubuntu on Dell - Good for Linux or just for Canonical?

05/02/2007  II
Relevance: 5.18
Dell hasn't stated yet exactly on which models it will provide pre-installed Ubuntu, but Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols has a nice analysis of the different options and most likely models. One thing sticks out from that list: as bigg on the LXer forum has noticed, they all have Nvidia cards and Broadcom 1390 wireless cards. Will Dell be shipping machines with no hardware 3D and wireless support? That can't be good for Linux! But it's certainly going to be good for Canonical selling paid support...

Art production and the open source paradigm

12/10/2006  I
Relevance: 5.11
Art production in an open source environment is more of a challenge than most people think. I know this from my experience in the Ubuntu interface design project in past few years. It has become clear to me that it is impossible to produce high quality visual content in an environment that is lacking coordination. That insight prompted me to investigate other models that could be adopted and used in the open source context. I found the commercial agency to be one of the most efficient and productive models that I can recommend for adaptation, thanks to one single factor -- art direction. Art direction assures the unity and consistency that are the main characteristics of professional artwork.

Acer P243WAid 24" LCD

07/22/2008  II
Relevance: 4.54
In the past we have looked at several different Acer LCDs and generally have been quite pleased with them. Acer offers LCD panels that range from cost-effective 17" models to higher-end models that are much larger and offer additional features such as a metal stand, integrated audio, and HDMI. For those that are interested in a large high-resolution screen with HDMI support and a fast response time, but that isn't too expensive, Acer has the P243WAid. The Acer P243WAid is a 24" LCD that fits these traits and sells for about $390 USD, but it lacks some extra features such as height and pivot adjustments.
