Red Hat Fedora Linux: 9.5 Million Users and Growing

Red Hat's Fedora community Linux distribution has now tallied its user base, and it's a number that on the surface would make it the largest installed base of any Linux distribution, with at least 9.5 million users and possibly as many as 10.5 million. Fedora competitor Ubuntu Linux currently claims to have 8 million users."The total number of users has always been an incredibly difficult number to measure," Paul Frields, Fedora's project leader, told InternetNews.com."If you total up all the unique IP's ... on Fedora 7, 8 and 9, it adds up to about 9.5 million boxes right now."

Novell’s Linux Business is Booming

On a superficial level, Novell’s third quarter, which ended July 31, 2008, didn’t look that good. A closer look reveals though that Novell did quite well in general and extremely well with its Linux business. According to the company press release, “For the quarter, Novell reported net revenue of $245 million.” This wasup from Novell’s net revenue of $237 million for the third fiscal quarter 2007. “Income from operations for the third fiscal quarter 2008 was $1 million, compared to a loss from operations of $10 million for the third fiscal quarter 2007. Loss from continuing operations in the third fiscal quarter 2008 was $15 million, or $0.04 loss per share, due to a $15 million impairment charge related to our auction-rate securities.”

Replacing Linux with Windows saves£1 million

A UK company says its switch from Linux to Windows will save it£1 million (almost $A2.3 million). How does that work? According to a case study published by Microsoft, British tool and equipment hire specialist Speedy Hire has junked the Linux and OpenOffice based systems running in its depots in favour of Windows and Microsoft Office. Why? Because the company expects to save £1 million over five years. Saving £200,000 a year doesn't sound quite so impressive, but we'll let that pass.

Sun Will Cut Up to 6,000 Workers as Financial Crisis Deepens

Sun Microsystems Inc. plans to cut as many as 6,000 jobs as the company tries to cope with plunging sales of server computers to financial firms, market-share losses to bigger competitors and a spiraling stock price. The reduction, which will eliminate as much as 18 percent of the staff, will shave $700 million to $800 million from annual expenses, Sun said today in an e-mailed statement. The moves will cost as much as $600 million in the next 12 months.

Red Hat shares jumped more than 12 percent in after-hours trading Thursday after the Linux distributor posted financial results that topped analysts estimates. Excluding one-time items, the company posted a profit of $29.6 million, or $0.14 per share, compared to $22.7 million in the year-ago quarter after adjusting for stock compensation and tax expenses. Analysts polled on Thomson Financial estimated the software company would report earnings per share of $0.12 and revenues of $104.16 million versus $73.11 million in the year-ago quarter.

Firefox 2 is reported to have over 2 million downloads in the first 24 hours with demand as high as 30 downloads a second at times. The Firefox team is well on the way to overshadowing the 3 million in 4 days that downloaded IE7. It takes a few days to update the statistics, as they need to get the figures in from the mirror sites, the company said.

Mozilla revenues hit $75 million

Mozilla Chief Wrangler Mitchell Baker today reported Mozilla's financial position which shows 2007 revenues of $75 million up by 12 percent from 2006 revenues of $67 million. Though Mozilla is on the upswing, Baker's report shows some areas of potential future financial concerns including an IRS review.
