Ubuntu's Migration Assistant Works!

03/18/2007  IIIIII
Relevance: 7.76
If you had missed my original blog entry, migration-assistant is automatically run during the Ubuntu installation process from its LiveCD. Microsoft Windows is not the only operating system supported, but you can automatically transport the files and settings from a previous Ubuntu installation or other Linux distributions. I have detailed the workings of migration-assistant a lot more in my original post. A working copy of migration-assistant is available through the daily LiveCD builds of Ubuntu and will also be available in the beta release of Ubuntu 7.04.

This migration-assistant will be found in Ubuntu 7.04 Feisty Fawn and makes it easier to move your documents and settings over to Ubuntu from other operating systems. Switching Linux distributions can be a pain, but switching from Windows to Linux can be a disaster for most people. The Ubuntu migration-assistant hopes to lessen this impact by making the transfer of settings and files MUCH easier.

Amsterdam may soon start migration to open source& open standards

10/09/2007  I
Relevance: 6.58
Amsterdam,NL could be the third big municipality in Europe switching to open source - following Munich and Vienna. A test amongst users of fifty PC's showed there are now technical difficulties when migrating to open source. The test showed the users don't have problems switching to OpenOffice and Linux. The municipal agency which conducted the test thinks the migration could be cost-neutral, which means Dutch tax payers won't have to pay for the probably migration. The City Council will decide about the migration in December. Also, over twenty other municipalities in the Netherlands signed a manifesto stating they want to become more independent of single vendors, so more municipalities might follow in the future.[After noticing this news, I sent out a mail to this municipal agency with some questions. Stay tuned, as I will publish about this issue once I receive an answer - hkwint ]

07/17/2007  IIIIIII
Relevance: 6.28
An impulsive and immediate migration to Linux can sometimes lead to disappointment. Ambitious businesses are sometimes led to believe that their data can merely be be dumped from one platform onto another, but the reality is a little more complex than this. In order for a migration to be successful, one needs to be familiar with native Linux applications, and the data needs to be stored in a format that is independent from just a single application.
