This is an elaborate review of a very good book on Google Maps and how one can use the Google Map API to integrate interactive maps with ones personal websites. Google API translation fix for Chinese mapping

12/29/2008  IIII
Relevance: 9.65
Google Maps is a free service that provides browser-based directions as well as maps of particular locations through the Internet. You can zoom in on the interactive maps to show detailed information, providing great user interactivity with the Web site. The maps provided by Google can be used not only directly by customers, but also to develop customized map services and products with the Google Maps API. The latest Google Maps API version, however, is not good at parsing Chinese geography, which makes it difficult to use in applications for a Chinese audience. In this article, we describe a feasible solution, combining other Web services, to parse Chinese geography with the current Google Maps API for a Chinese mapping solution. We'll use the example of the sites for the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games to demonstrate our solution.

Displaying maps with OpenLayers

12/26/2008  II
Relevance: 8.53
Google Maps gives you a quick and easy way to add maps to your Web site, but when you're using Google's API, your ability to display other data is limited. If you have your own data you want to display, or data from sources other than Google, OpenLayers, an open source JavaScript library, can give you more options.

Serving and styling maps with Geoserver

09/25/2008  IIIII
Relevance: 8.44
Google Maps opened up a whole new world of mapping on the Web, making it easy for companies and individuals to put their data on a map. But if you want more control over how your maps look, or have data that doesn't really work well with Google Maps, there are other options, including serving your own data with Geoserver. Geoserver implements the Open Geospatial Consortium's Web Feature Server and Web Coverage Server specifications, with an integrated Web Map Server. The current stable version is 1.6.5, although the developers recently released 1.7.0-RC2. Written in Java, it's available for Linux and Unix variants and for Windows, and it requires a Java Runtime Environment, such as Sun JRE 6, to run.

Relevance: 7.02
AirRivals is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) with the characteristics of both Third-person shooters and flight simulators, developed by MasangSoft and owned by Yedang. In AirRivals, players pilot their own individual starfighters (called"Gears") throughout a number of maps, including terrestrial, lunar, and space maps. It has typical MMORPG elements such as leveling, currency, and a skills system. Ace Online is a largely Player vs. Player (PvP)-oriented game, with character leveling and item acquisition achieved through combat against Non-Player Characters (NPCs) and the completion of missions. As a player gains levels, more and more maps become accessible.

In this two-part article series, to turn street addresses into their geographical coordinates for storage in the database, you will call the Google Geocoder Web service from PHP. You will then produce XML data from MySQL using stored procedures, and an XSLT stylesheet to transform the data into a KML overlay to view in Google Maps and Google Earth.

Navicore on the N800: Taking Linux to the streets!

07/24/2007  IIIII
Relevance: 5.98
Navicore is Nokia's GPS mapping and navigation program for the Linux-powered N800 Internet Tablet. The kit comes with a Bluetooth GPS receiver, car-mounting hardware, and a memory card containing the Navicore Personal software and map collection. If you have an N800, it's a great travel aid. Sadly, there is one strike against Navicore that I see no way around for desktop Linux users. The N800 Navigation Kit ships with a memory card containing one region's maps (say, North America). The Navicore Web site contains additional maps for other regions of the world -- but you cannot access or install any of that data without running Windows.
