Relevance: 6.06
Database maker Oracle and host bus adapter maker Emulex today announced that they have contributed code to eliminate silent data corruption to the open source Linux operating system. The two also said this code has been accepted in the 2.6.27 kernel, which is the latest stable release. Back in April 2007, Oracle, Emulex, disk maker Seagate, and disk array maker LSI Logic announced that they would be extending a standard called T10 Data Integrity Field (DIF) so it would reach from software applications through storage arrays and their related file systems down to the disk drive. The data integrity effort, says Oracle, is about making sure that data does not become corrupted as it moves from the application servers to the database and then from the Linux operating system into the disk storage attached to it.

Microsoft has announced that it will buy DATAllegro, maker of data warehouse appliances. It plans to use the acquired technology as the basis for a SQL Server 2008 appliance. This purchase is interesting on a lot of levels for the enterprise market. First and foremost, it signals that the hot area of high-end, shared nothing massively parallel processing (MPP) appliances have won out and users can expect them to take a major leap toward affordability, now that Microsoft has entered the market.

Writer's World Maker aims at wannabe writers

09/12/2008  IIIII
Relevance: 4.72
The splash screen for Writer's World Maker (WWM) announces that the program is designed to"help you to summon your imaginary worlds to the printed page." And, considering its flexibility and thoroughness in some areas -- especially defining characters -- at times it almost realizes this goal. However, interface problems, as well as a fannish orientation at the expense of detailed planning in other areas, makes it a program more suitable for wannabes than working writers. Now at version 1.0.31, WWM is available as source code and Debian, Fedora, Mandriva, and Ubuntu packages. If the Debian package is any indication, though, these packages are not set up for dependency resolution. You must install the Gambas programming language packages for your distribution before you install WWM. You will also need to install Qt support if you do not already have KDE installed.
