Mplayer, FFmpeg Gain VA-API Support

Relevance: 8.07
Video acceleration APIs for Linux has been a hot topic recently with NVIDIA having introduced VDPAU last month (the Video Decode and Presentation API for Unix) that brings PureVideo-like features to Linux with great results while it's already finding its way into MPlayer, FFmpeg, MythTV, Xine, and VLC. AMD has been working hard on XvBA (X-Video Bitstream Acceleration), but that has yet to be officially introduced. In the open-source realm there has been talk of extending XvMC to support video formats besides MPEG-2, but that hasn't yet amounted to anything. Today though another video API is now on scene with VA-API finally being implemented in MPlayer and FFmpeg.

Triple your audio volume in MPlayer

Relevance: 7.82
Some videos you download might not have such a high audio volume, even with alsamixer set to 100%. There’s a trick for this. Start your video with mplayer -softvol -softvol-max 300 video_file.avi to boost your volume 300%. Substitute 300 with any number ranging from 10 to 10000. Be careful not to break your speakers.

Einbruchsgefahr: Patch für den MPlayer

10/02/2008  IIIIII
Relevance: 7.53

Powerful Multimedia Command-Line Tools, Part II—Transcode

01/19/2008  I
Relevance: 6.46
MEncoder has supported video encoding for a long time with the MPlayer Project and FFmpeg, which also now is part of MPlayer now. Transcode is a new command-line tool on the horizon for video and audio transformations. Transcode used to give me horrors, but it is much better now. It does take some time to learn its wonderfully unintuitive syntax the author used all the lowercase and uppercase English alphabet letters for specifying the command-line options. Using longer mnemonic options common in other Linux commands might have made things easier. Anyway, let's get to the meat of the matter.
