Managing your MP3s with Zina

12/02/2008  IIII
Large collections of MP3 files can be hard to manage. Organizing your music into directories helps some, but when you want to play just those tracks in a certain genre or from a certain year, no amount of directory organization will help -- but Zina, a powerful Web application, can. Zina is easiest to set up if you already have a home Web server. You must understand how to set up CGI applications on your Web server. If you're using Apache, you can read a nice tutorial for basic CGI setups. You must also have PHP in your Apache setup, as that is the language that Zina is written in.

Kid3 - opensource ID tagger to edit mp3& other media files

11/07/2008  III
Kid3 is a free opensource tool to easily tag multiple MP3 files (e.g. full albums) without typing the same information again and again and allow you to control and edit ID3v1 and ID3v2 tags. It’s one of those things I started doing so enthusiatically and then give up after a few tracks and finally this should help me get around this.

Listen to your music anywhere with Subsonic

11/06/2008  IIIIIIIIII
If your music library is tied to your CD collection or MP3 player, you can still hit the road without losing access to your tunes. Subsonic is a free, Web-based media streamer that lets you -- and your friends -- access your music collection over the Internet. Subsonic can handle large music collections, running into the thousands of CDs. It also works with video; in fact, it can let you remotely access any format that can be streamed over a standard HTTP connection. If needed, Subsonic will convert your collection to a streaming format on the fly, taking into account the available bandwidth. You can use any browser and media player combination to listen to your music; I went for Firefox and RealPlayer, but other combinations are equally valid.

Asus promises $200 eee PC in 2009

11/04/2008  IIIII
There's no doubt about, when it comes to selling small laptops (or what's now often called a netbook) Asus is king of the hill. Just like most people think of Apple's iPod when it comes to MP3 players Asus' eee PC brand has become synonymous with small inexpensive laptops. I honestly can't remember the last university lecture where I didn't see at least one student with an eee PC and on a short 2h train-ride on the weekend I spotted 3 people using eee PCs.

Some open source software and a cable are all you need to convert your prized vinyl to something portable. If all you want to do is create MP3 files from you LP tracks, the only software you'll need is Audacity. If you want to convert vinyl to CD, you'll need cdrdao and cdrecord as well. iPhone and Android to give customers freedom from carriers: analyst

07/16/2008  II
Part of the problem is the way carriers think they 'own' their customers. This can be seen in the way customers are forced into accepting specific bundles (eg, you can only have this much data unless you buy that much voice), nonstandard and crippled firmware (eg, no using MP3 files as ringtones), and more generous access to some sites than others (eg, search engines associated with the carrier)."The mobile operator-centric WAP-based ecosystem for applications has been challenged, unsuccessfully before," said In-Stat analyst Bill Hughes.

Manage and play your audio files over the Web with Ampache

07/14/2008  I
Ampache is a LAMP application that gives you a Web interface to your music collection, allowing you to search, rate, and play your music over the network. It even offers transcoding support to allow clients to play back lossless-encoded FLAC files from the server and stream them to clients as MP3 audio files. Packages for Ampache are in the standard Ubuntu Hardy repository as well as a 1-Click install for openSUSE 11. No Ampache packages are in the Fedora repositories. For this article I'll build Ampache 3.4.1 from source on a 64-bit Fedora 8 machine.
