This is an important step forward in the eco-system of support for this codebase and congratulations are in order to the Resolution team! -Fred Trotter

High Tech: Highest Resolution Computer Screen Ever, 220 Million Pixels

08/27/2007  III
Relevance: 7.22
Engineers at the UC San Diego have constructed the highest-resolution computer display in the world - with a screen resolution up to 220 million pixels. UCSD's Linux-based OptIPortal consists of 55 Dell displays driven by 18 Dell XPS personal computers. The system at UCSD uses the San Diego Supercomputer Center's new 64-bit version of grid-computing middleware known as ROCKS released in early August and Calit2's Cluster GL for heterogeneous systems (CGLX) framework.

Some OOXML Ballot Resolution Meeting comments

11/01/2007  II
Relevance: 6.53
The situation and rules for the Ballot Resolution Meeting (BRM) are starting to become clearer. As you may know, this is a follow-up to the September 2 vote where the Microsoft/ECMA OOXML (' Open' 'XML' ) specification failed on both measures to become an ISO/IEC JTC1.Given the way the system works, this means that we get to go on and try something else to make it a standard. And if that doesn't work, try something else. Repeat until either the opposition goes away, gets bored, orno one remembers what you were trying to do in the first place (grin).

Some clarifications on the OOXML Ballot Resolution Meeting

03/04/2008  II
Relevance: 6.31
I have been one of the two Greek delegates to the OOXML Ballot Resolution Meeting (BRM). Lots of things have already been written about the meeting. I will not repeat them here, but will only make a few clarifications on things that I think are not well understood.[Probably the most detailed report I've seen so far on the misproceedings last week. - Sander]

Microsoft lobby platform"Voices for Innovation", which is managed by APCO (a well-known lobby firm in Brussels of which Microsoft is a client), has sent an alert to their corporate members asking them to lobby against a parliamentary resolution led by Rocard-Cotigny-Geremek-Geremek, which is asking to migrate the European Parliament systems to FLOSS, and to give some funds for R&D of FLOSS in Europe.

Monday morning: OOXML BRM tidbits

02/26/2008  I
Relevance: 5.81
I'm in Geneva this week because I'm taking part in the Open Forum Europe conference 'Standards and the Future of the Internet.' In addition, of course, the ISO/IEC OOXML Ballot Resolution Meeting is taking place this week. To be clear, I'm not participating in the BRM but there is a tremendous buzz and a lot of murmurs about it. I hope that people who are taking part in the meeting will be blogging throughout the week.[The OOXML Ballot Resolution Meeting is this week, so expect a lot of coverage on it during the next two weeks - Sander]

Apple, Psystar agree to dispute resolution process

10/19/2008  IIIII
Relevance: 5.58
Apple and Psystar have agreed to pursue a mediated settlement to their legal dispute over Psystar's Open Computers. The Mac Observer turned up a court filing from earlier this month in the Apple-Psystar case noting that the two parties have agreed to participate in the Alternative Dispute Resolution process. As you may recall, Apple sued Psystar earlier this year for copyright infringement after Psystar began selling low-cost Open Computers with Mac OS X preinstalled. Psystar then countersued Apple on antitrust grounds.

Parsix: Persian distro makes GNOME look good

02/25/2008  II
Relevance: 5.40
Last month the Parsix Linux distribution made its 1.0 release after almost a year of development. Parsix is a GNOME-based distro based on the testing branch of Debian GNU/Linux with elements from Kanotix. It makes an attractive alternative to Ubuntu. Parsix comes as an installable live CD and features GNOME 2.20.3 as the desktop. It hails from Persia, but the language and keyboard default to en_US. When you first boot the live CD, Parsix provides two handy boot options for wide-screen display resolutions. Many distros auto-detect the optimal resolution, but many don't. This approach is a great compromise, and assured that I was able to boot into my desired resolution.

What's wrong with Ubuntu 7.04

04/30/2007  IIIIIIII
Relevance: 4.76
It's out love for Ubuntu that I'm being so harsh in this review. Look where we're at -- 7.04, a number of significant releases since 4.10 Warty three years ago -- and it still can't manage the display resolution properly, for example.
