Plotting your Web site visitors on a map

ApacheMap plots the location of each Web hit your site receives on a Google Map. The utility converts IP addresses from Apache logs into longitude and latitude information using hostip.info. HostIP relies on users submitting information about what geographic location should be associated with an IP address. This can present problems, because some IP addresses cannot be resolved into geographic information. In fact, the IP address I was using when I visited hostip.info was not recognized, but sites such as geoiptool.com offered a reasonable guess as to my location based purely on my IP address. Regardless, the results of a geographic lookup from an IP address should always be taken with a grain of salt.

We all have them; snippets of code, half-written tutorials, cooking recipes, photo galleries, blogs, information about a project or event, and the list goes on. Information can take many forms. Writing a book? Have a document you want the world to be able to access? Wouldn't it be nice to have a central location for all of these things and have them all conform to a common appearance? Or, better yet, a central location where several authors can collaborate on these items?

If you maintain a portal, ecommerce site, or heavily trafficked Web site, you might appreciate the ability to identify the geographical location of your site visitors. Geolocation information can help you localize content, serve relevant local advertisements, offer a download mirror close to visitors, and detect online fraud. Techniques like whois lookup of IP addresses are of some help, but they don't always find accurate locations. A better approach is a database that maps each IP address to a location -- such as MaxMind's GeoIP.

Last year, I took a trip to Asia. To stay in touch, I carried a GSM world phone, capable of receiving telephone calls in the countries I was visiting. The capability to receive calls with the same mobile phone number I use at home while halfway across the world seemed incredibly cool-at least until the first call came in! Mobile phones hide the location of the phone, which cuts both ways. A colleague had decided to call me in the middle of the day on a Friday, which had awakened me very early on Saturday morning, because the phone"hid"my faraway location from him.
