CentOS LiveCD 5.0 Screenshots

CentOS, the popular community Linux distribution based upon Red Hat Enterprise Linux, has been at version 5.0 since April of this year, but joining the CentOS 5.0 fleet today is the LiveCD. The CentOS 5.0 LiveCD is based upon CentOS 5.0 i386 and can work out to be a modest Linux workstation or recovery distribution. Included with this new Linux LiveCD is OpenOffice.org 2.0.4, GNOME 2.16, GAIM 2.0.0, and Thunderbird 1.5. While this isn't a great Linux desktop distribution, if you're after a workstation or recovery-oriented distribution, the CentOS 5.0 LiveCD looks great.

HowTo Remaster a LiveCD or LiveDVD using SLAX

10/06/2008  I
Relevance: 7.93
The other day I had to come up with a way to transfer a Solaris Express nv97 DVD 3G image to remote locations while not using the network. The reason for this is, I needed to perform a LiveUpgrade on over 700 boxes and each being at a different locations. So I said to myself I guess I can put this image on a custom LiveDVD... But then I said to myself, which Linux LiveCD/DVD distro will I use???? It has to be small enough so that I can fit the Solaris Express nv97 image as well as the LiveCD Image.

Firmware Updates LiveCD thanks to Revisor

One of the coolest tools to come out of the Fedora Project is Revisor, which makes it blindingly simple to create your own custom Linux distribution, where you get to choose the packages you wish to include. This week I've been playing with Revisor to generate a Dell Firmware Updates LiveCD. The result is a bootable LiveCD that lets you log in and run 'update_firmware' to flash your system to the latest BIOS on 282 Dell system types.[In a comment, Matt adds that hopefully it will get released on linux.dell.com in the future. Nice work Dell.— Sander]

The third test release of Parsix GNU/Linux 0.90 is now available. New in this LiveCD is GNOME 2.18.2, Sun Java replaced by GCJ, added the Parsix Book to the LiveCD, several bug fixes, glibc 2.5, and many other improvements. If you've never tried out Parsix, it's based on a combination of KANOTIX and Debian that is a well polished distribution worth trying out for desktop users.

Geexbox - Standalone Linux Media Center on a LiveCD

11/02/2006  III
Relevance: 6.60
The folks at Slashgear recently posted an interview with Benjami Zores, one of the core developers of the embedded Linux distribution knows as GeeXboX. In summary, GeeXboX, which incidentally has no affiliation or tie in with the Microsoft console, is a fully operational Media Center solution available on what's known as a LiveCD. It works on both x86 and PowerPC based computers and is as easy to use as dropping a CD in a PC since no installation is required.

Not only was this week marked by the Intel Developer Forum, but the final version of KateOS 3.6 was also released earlier in the week. KateOS 3.6 features a new LiveCD installer, hundreds of updates to packages, a software-powered hibernation system, a new version of update-notifier, and new internationalization support. KateOS is not nearly as popular as Ubuntu or Fedora, but we highly recommend checking it out if you're after a Xfce-powered desktop.

Gentoo 2008.0 Beta 1 has been released. This is no April Fools' Day joke, it's really here. The Gentoo Foundation has had its share of problems as of late, there was never a Gentoo 2007.1 release, and this first beta is coming a bit late, but Gentoo 2008.0 Beta 1 is now available. We have some screenshots up of the Gentoo 2008.0 Beta 1 i686 LiveCD.
