Alan Cox on open-source development vs. proprietary development

10/25/2007  IIIIIII
Relevance: 6.47
Alan Cox emailed me this morning to note a presentation he gave way back in 2000 called"Dear Mr Brooks, or: Software engineering in the free software world." It's no surprise to me that my recent blog post (on the topic of optimally sized development teams) was better articulated by Alan many years ago. What was surprising is just how prescient Alan's talk was. And how informative. For anyone who has ever wondered how open-source software development works compared to proprietary-software development, this is an absolute must read.

Review: The Art of Lean Software Development: A Practical and Incremental Approach

02/26/2009  IIIIIII
Relevance: 5.76
What isLean Software Development? Fortunately, that's an OK question to ask if you are reading this book. It's not written for developers who are well versed in"lean" or"agile" development. That's good for the rest of us. For instance, in my"day job" we are slowly moving towards a more Agile development model. I suppose if some folks around here weren't all that sure what"agile" meant, reading up on it would be helpful. That's the sort of role this book hopes to fill relative to"lean", with the understanding that the"pro-lean subculture" is well associated with Agile development.

This week at LWN: Why people don't test development distributions

07/17/2009  IIIII
Relevance: 5.73
Development distributions play a crucial role in the free software ecosystem. They are the proving ground where much new software is first exposed to a wider user community; they are also the place where this software demonstrates how well it plays with other packages. Distributors would like to see wider testing of their development releases, but, as your editor's recent experience shows, there are limits to how wide this testing community can be expected to be.
