The FLA Gets Some Traction

08/26/2008  II
Relevance: 6.56
Have you ever heard of the Fiduciary Licence Agreement - the FLA? No, it's not an alterative to other free and open source license agreements that you're probably already familiar with, like the GPL, Mozilla License, and BSD License. Rather, it's an adjunct to any copyleft license, designed to help ensure the long-term survivability of free software projects. With the announcement last week that KDE has adopted an FLA, this notion may take on new prominence.

OSI Approves New Open-Source License

07/27/2007  II
Relevance: 6.46
The Open Source Initiative approved on July 25 its first new license in quite some time: the Common Public Attribution License, which is essentially the Mozilla Public License with a new attribution clause. But the road to approval was long and expensive, Ross Mayfield, CEO and co-founder of Socialtext, which submitted the license, told eWEEK in an interview at the O'Reilly Open Source Conference here.

Mozilla Admits Firefox EULA is flawed

09/17/2008  III
Relevance: 6.19
"There is a need for something, something to explain the license I'm not sure I would call it a EULA because that has a meaning to many people of adding restrictions to software and we won't be doing that," Baker said."We'll be having a license agreement much as Red Hat has a license agreement that says the software is available under the GPL and don't use our trademarks etcetera. So we'll have a license agreement but we won't think of it as a EULA."

TAPR introduces open source hardware license, OSI skeptical

02/24/2007  IIIIIII
Relevance: 6.05
The Tucson Amateur Packet Radio (TAPR) organization is sponsoring a new open-source license intended for hardware components. Authored by lawyer John Ackermann, the Open Hardware License (OHL) is a share-alike license that developers can apply to documentation and schematics associated with hardware projects. The license stipulates that those who distribute products based on OHL-licensed hardware specifications may not file patent infringement lawsuits against others who use the same hardware specifications.

Updated Free Documentation License released

09/28/2006  IIII
Relevance: 6.01
With arguments about changes to the GNU General Public License (GPL) still sizzling, the Free Software Foundation (FSF) has released a discussion draft of the new version of the GNU Free Documentation License (FDL). Many of the changes to the FDL mirror those to the GPL, including increased clarity of language and changes in wording to make internationalization clearer. In addition, the draft expands the license to make it suitable for audio and video, defines fair use, and introduces the Simpler Free Documentation License (SFDL), which is presented as a more straightforward alternative to the FDL. However, it seems questionable whether these changes will be enough to silence previous criticisms.

Linux: Relicensing Code

08/30/2007  III
Relevance: 5.96
In a recent series of patches posted to the Linux Kernel mailing list, it was proposed that some imported Atheros wireless device drivers be re-licensed, some from a dual-BSD/GPL license, others from a modified BSD license, all to a pure GPLv2 license. Christoph Hellwig asked,"is this really a good idea? Most of the reverse-engineering was done by the OpenBSD folks, and it would certainly be helpful to work together with them on new hardware revisions, etc.." Luis Rodriguez suggested that there was no choice,"technically the best we can do is to leave the license as dual licensed, but keep in that technically that means nothing and is just for show, the GPL is what would apply as its derivative work and is the most restrictive license."

When GPL software goes bad

04/17/2007  I
Relevance: 5.90
Users of a popular open-source accounting system may have just updated to a license they would never have agreed to had the author actually told them it had changed. What's more, the author is actively censoring attempts to advise the userbase of the license change, and appears to be making an attempt to retrospectively re-license all prior versions as well.
