Red Hat seeks high-end VARs

Ambitious open source vendor Red Hat is on the last leg of its race to push 70 per cent of its business through the channel and is gearing up to launch an additional partner accreditation. Red Hat currently works with two levels of partners: entry level Ready Partners, and higher-touch Advanced Partners. Last year it rolled out its Certified Service Provider Programme (CSPP) in the US, aimed at higher level integrators and VARs, and is now bringing the level to Europe.

Oracle Joins Free Standards Group at the Highest Level

Oracle's announcement yesterday of its"Unbreakable Linux 2.0" program, aimed squarely at Red Hat, understandably overshadowed another announcement Larry Ellison made in the same speech. That announcement revealed that Oracle has joined the Free Standards Group (FSG), at the highest level of membership. despite being active in Linux for many years, Oracle had not previously been a member of the FSG at any level.

Following a review of Ingo Molnar's Completely Fair Scheduler, Srivatsa Vaddagiri posted a patch allowing the new scheduler to provide fairness at a per-group level rather than at a per-process level. He described the changes that he made and noted,"I have used'uid' as the basis of grouping for timebeing (since that grouping concept is already in mainline today). The patch can be adapted to a moregeneric process grouping mechanism later."Ingo reacted to the patch favorably,"yeah, i like this alot." He went on to comment,"the'struct sched_entity' abstraction looks very clean, and that's the main thing that matters: it allows for a design that will only cost us performance if group scheduling is desired."

HP Releases Multi-level Security Services for RHEL5

HP, with its new multi-level security services for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 is now offering Common Criteria certified level security for this Linux on its server and desktops. Common Criteria is an ISO security framework standard. It is frequently required in government computing contracts.
