Is KDE back? 4.1 launches

Launched yesterday, and available now in Debian"experimental," KDE 4.1 is what 4.0 should have been, one reviewer finds. With some 70,000 software changes since 4.0 launched at Google HQ last Jan., is KDE 4.1 about to usher in the future of the Linux desktop? The first RC1 release of KDE 4.0 appeared nearly a year ago. The full major 4.0 version was then officially launched at Google headquarters on Jan. 18. Then, team KDE really got busy, implementing a roadmap that called for minor releases each month. Those releases, in turn, culminated with the release of KDE 4.1 yesterday.

SQO-OSS Project Launched with KDE

A version of Wikipedia aimed at school children has been launched. Equating a 15 volume encyclopedia, the content has been limited to articles suitable for children. Accessible online and as a download, the encyclopedia will soon be found in all tuXlab schools in South Africa.

Red Hat haunts Ellison's Linux dream

This time last year, Oracle's Unbreakable Linux Network launched at OpenWorld to much fanfare. It was supposed to be a Red Hat killer. It has had as much impact upon Red Hat has a dead sheep. Larry Ellison says this is going to change. During his OpenWorld keynote this year, the Oracle CEO said the company means business next year. Oracle VM server virtualization, launched this week, will"differentiate ourselves from Red Hat", he proclaimed. And"going into the second year we will have sales with support and engineering, and we will grow faster."

The answer is gOS, which recently launched a new beta that builds on the distro's initial success and adds new tools like integrated Google Gadgets for Linux. When it launched onto the scene late last year, gOS (which stands for good OS) made quite a splash for getting Linux into the U.S. retail giant WalMart. Through a partnership with PC manufacturer Everex, gOS brought Linux to your parents' generation via WalMart.
