5-year-olds repair OLPC laptops at Nigerian"hospital"

Relevance: 11.79
During the recent Greener Gadgets Conference in New York, former OLPC CTO (and XO challenger) Mary Lou Jepsen discussed the real-world difficulties with using the kid-friendly laptops, including the creation of an XO"hospital" used to repair broken computers. Apparently, in the crowded conditions of schools in places like Nigeria, the little green laptops have a tendency to be jostled around and even knocked on the floor from time to time. As there's typically no repair shops nearby, the kids have learned to fix the systems themselves, setting up a"laptop hospital" where they can repair what's broken using simple tools and cheap replacement parts.

Mr. Fixit Goes Open Source With DIY Repair Site

04/25/2010  I
Relevance: 10.32
Previously, iFixit was a repair site that posted step-by-step disassembly instructions for gadgets posted by iFixit staff. The company makes money by selling parts (like replacement iPhone screens) that intrepid fixers can use in their repair projects. Later, iFixit implemented a gallery tool for anybody to post an illustrative teardown manual for their gadgets (which Gadget Lab helped introduce with a Sony teardown contest). Now, the site has repurposed itself into a full-blown wiki for repair manuals, where contributors can collaborate on repair instructions in real time.

The Institute for Justice has filed a lawsuit on behalf of computer repair guy Mike Rife against the Texas Private Security Bureau (PSB) arguing that a new law unconstitutionally denies computer repair companies the right to work in their chosen profession. This based around the Texas Constitution which protects the right of Texans to earn an honest living without unreasonable government interference.[Not FOSS related but I thought it would be of interest - Scott]

In search of the best OS for a 9-year-old laptop: Part VIIIâ€' Final thoughts (aka"Why?")

You might ask why I'm spending so much time figuring out how to best configure a Compaq Armada 7770dmtâ€' a laptop with an ancient 233MHz Pentium II MMX processor, feeble 144MB of RAM and smallish 3GB hard drive. For one thing, I almost never abandon a machine that can be used. And this one definitely can be. Plus, I like the Compaq. It has a nice screen and keyboard, I like the fact that its power supply is totally contained in the laptop case. The thing's pretty solid.
