French presidential candidates on free software, related issues

04/21/2007  II
Relevance: 5.26
When free software supporters participate in the French presidential election on April 22nd for the first round of voting, they will have information that may be unique in the world: position statements from all major parties on issues about free software, copyright, patents, and digital rights. Even more surprisingly -- at least from a North American perspective -- a majority of the candidates have heard of these issues and developed positions on them.

This week at LWN: Kernel security, year to date

09/20/2008  IIIIIIII
Relevance: 5.19
Earlier this year, your editor asked a high-profile kernel developer, in a public discussion at a conference, about the seemingly large number of kernel-related security bugs. Was the number of these vulnerabilities of concern, and what was being done about it? The answer that came back was that security issues aren't a huge concern, that most of the reported issues were obscure local exploits requiring the presence of specific hardware. Serious issues, like the vmsplice() vulnerability, are rare.

The changing face of charts in OpenOffice.org

09/06/2006  IIIIII
Relevance: 5.14
The charting component is probably the least satisfactory part of OpenOffice.org. A few minutes with the issue tracker shows that, since OpenOffice.org 2.0 was released, 62 issues have been filed for charting. By contrast, the bibliography component and the formula editor, two other problematic subsystems that are comparable in size, have nine and 27 issues files against them respectively. Work has begun on many of the issues about charts, but complete relief is unlikely to come until the final release of Chart 2, the rewriting of the charting component that is due to be part of the as-yet unscheduled 2.6 version of the office suite.

10/24/2008  IIIIII
Relevance: 4.76
We have been using kUbuntu for about 3 years now and have always been slow to upgrade to newer versions, fearing the impending bug, broken configuration with hardware, or grub issues. So when 8.04 rolled out, having been using a'fairly' stable 7.10, we were quite hesitant to change. However, we had finally decided to upgrade this past weekend, and to our suprise, everything was smooth....well somewhat....

A fight against evil or a fight for attention?

09/28/2006  IIII
Relevance: 4.69
Two hot issues are making the rounds. First, Debian and Firefox are having a spat, and the end result may be that Debian will distribute Firefox under a different name. Second, the war betwen Linus Torvalds and other Kernel developers and the Free Software Foundation over GPLv3 is continuing, with Torvalds saying he's fed up with the FSF. Here is my take on both, and related issues.
