Simple Internal Bookmarks from Menus back to Home Page

06/02/2008  I
Relevance: 5.71
Here is a quick hint how to connect related site pages with another simple set of internal book marks. As I wrote previously in the footnotes method, I have now related menu names to link back to the home page using a small set of descriptive names. This small set of names makes the bookmarking implementation easy.

Zonbu Mini PC: Boom or Boo-Boo?

08/24/2007  IIIIIIIIII
Relevance: 5.63
The eponymous Zonbu is actually a low-energy miniature PC currently in"public beta" testing. There's no fan, no hard disk, and no Microsoft Windows. A laptop hard disk can be installed using the internal IDE slot, as can a Bluetooth or WiFi card using the mini-PCI slot (a spot for an external WiFi LED is already marked on the aluminum case.) Also included are a massive internal heat sink, a 4GB Compact Flash card, six USB 2.0 ports, and Gentoo Linux.

Govt OSS migration will need skills

08/29/2007  III
Relevance: 5.38
Governments looking to migrate to open source software (OSS) will need to ramp up their internal skills base, according to Gartner analyst Andrea Di Maio. Di Maio said that over time organisations had become reliant on external skills in their operations. One of the primary challenges for governments moving to open source would be the need to re-instate internal skills."In moving to open source you can't rely on external skills and [before the move] you will need to assess whether you will be able to ramp up the the required level."

Coming Soon: AMD R600 3D Documentation

08/13/2008  III
Relevance: 5.36
For months we have been telling you that AMD has been preparing to release their R600 series documentation as well as opening up the source-code to two of their internal software projects used for testing new graphics processor designs prior to the availability of the actual hardware. Advanced Micro Devices has yet to release their 3D programming documentation covering the R600 series (or the brand-new RV770) nor the source-code to their two internal projects (TCore and KGrids), but following several postings in our forums over the past couple of weeks and many emails inquiring about the status, today we have a brief update to share.

Load Me Up, Load Me Down

The HP Media Vault 5150 is a Linux-based network-attached storage (NAS) device that aims to be the end-all-be-all for home and small-office network file management and media service. It boasts not only a large capacity (700GB or 1.4TB depending on how you allocate it), it also has a hardware RAID-1 option and USB ports for attaching additional storage. Its internal drive bays use SATA drives, and the internal capacity theoretically is upgradable to the limit of SATA drive technology, and it hooks into your network through Gigabit Ethernet. Running out of bandwidth, therefore, is not in the cards.

Setting up dual monitors system-wide with XRandR on Debian Lenny

I have been playing with my monitor setup again on my Dell D530 laptop. The internal monitor of the laptop is 1400x1050 pixels, but I usually use a 19" external monitor set to 1280x1024. With Etch this worked flawless but when I upgraded to Lenny this stopped working. I had to change the resolution each time I changed from external screen to internal screen and back. At the same time I also got interested in trying a dual-head setup instead of only an external monitor when one was connected. I was going to need completely different layouts depending on the external monitor. It took a while before I figured out how to do it, it took a little longer to fight GNOME into submission, but here is how to make it work.
