Dollars and CentOS 4.5: Updating Up2date

I'm at the tail end of my CentOS 4.5 install. Once again, I continue to be impressed with the Anaconda installer. It's one of the best I've seen. It gives you a lot of freedom to pick which packages you want to install. I bulked up on the KDE -- I wanted everything to be as ready as it could be when the install finished. Once the install was done, I clicked the icon to run up2date. It seemed to be taking forever and then I noticed the notes in one of the boxes: Up2date needs to be up to date before using it. So I opened a terminal and used yum to update Up2date. Then I clicked the update icon again, and everything started flowing.

Ubuntu 8.04: Upgrade or clean install?

Relevance: 4.36
Which path should you follow? Should you take advantage of Ubuntu's package manager and use it to upgrade your system to the latest 8.04 Hardy Heron release, or should you download a CD or DVD ISO image and do a clean install? Common wisdom says that doing a clean install is the better, safer course of action. There may be a little extra work involved configuring everything once the latest and greatest is installed, but that's nothing compared to the pain of an update gone wrong, according to traditional thinking. But that cautious approach may no longer be necessary.

Manage MySQL remotely with phpMyAdmin

Odds are, if you design Web sites with a database back end, you've worked with MySQL. You can manage this database from the command line, but it's not very user-friendly. Using the graphical tool phpMyAdmin helps, but not all Web hosting providers offer it or allow you to install it on the server. Fortunately, you can install it on your own box and manage several MySQL databases remotely at the same time, without having to install anything anywhere else.

This posting is supposed to respond HowToForge's notice that installing Xen 3.1.0 on Debian Etch AMD64, regardless of the method (Xen source install vs. Xen x86_64 binary install) didn't work. Here is how I installed Xen on my Debian Etch 4.0 (amd64) box assembled with Core 2 Duo E6600, ASUS P5B Deluxe, 2 GB RAM (Kingston non ECC) and a SATA HDD Seagate Barracuda 160 GB x 2.

We were out on Christmas Eve doing an install in a nasty part of town. The East side of Austin at night isn't a good place for a couple white boys to be boppin' the streets after dark. Never the less, we had an install to do there and we had to get it done.
