NVIDIA 100.14.09 Display Driver

We have previously looked at the NVIDIA 100.14.03 and 100.14.06 display drivers, but this afternoon we finally have our hands on the stable NVIDIA 100.14.09 driver. New in version 100.14.09 is added GeForce 8 and Quadro product support, improved notebook GPU support, improved RenderAccel support for sub-pixel anti-aliased fonts, added Xv brightness and contrast controls, improved interaction with newer kernels, and fixing an issue with nvidia-settings. The new yet-to-be-released GeForce 8 names have also tipped up in the release notes. We've seen many of these features introduced in the previous 100.14.xx builds, but they are now officially supported.

Fans of OpenSUSE 10.3 will be pleased to hear OpenSUSE 10.3 has been released. So, what can you expect? For a start, an improved interface with the latest versions of Gnome and KDE, including a KDE 4 preview. Or, for those still tied to Windows, an improved Linux-Windows dual boot option, better Microsoft Office format compatibility (what else did you expect?) and the latest version of OpenOffice.org (2.3).

Improved kprop script

I run a master and slave Kerberos servers, which requires setting up kprop to run regularly on the master server in order to transfer any changes to the slave server. I didn't like the standard script, because I only want to know about it in the event of failure. So I wrote this slightly improved script, which does just that.

Google crome: Improved support in wine... with a caveat

Wine 1.1.4 went public only two weeks after the earlier version 1.1.3 and, along with fixed bugs, provides better support for the new Chrome Google browser. The developers also tout its substantial WinHTTP implementation and improved JavaScript support. A complete list of changes can be found at the WINE HQ website, with binaries for Wine 1.1.4 to follow shortly. The source code can be downloaded from the Sourceforge portal.

GNUmed 0.2.8.0 released

A report generator to visualize query results with gnuplot has been added. Exception handling has been improved. The Snellen Chart has been reactivated. KVK handling has officially been included. More hooks and an improved example hook script were added. Demographics handling has been extended to now really support multiple names, addresses, comm channels, and external IDs. Furthermore, there are lots of GUI-accessible configuration options that were always there in the backend but didn't have a frontend to them. File format handling in document management has seen improvements.

NVIDIA XRender Performance Improved

Towards the middle of last month, NVIDIA had released the 169.04 Beta Linux Driver. The change-log was quite lengthy and what we had discovered while benchmarking the GeForce 8 series was that there were improvements to be found in this release and it was far more than a simple version bump. One of the reported changes for this driver release was"improved RENDER performance", and out of requests from readers and interest by the Linux desktop community at large, we have conducted XRender benchmarks using render_bench and have the NVIDIA results available today.
