09/07/2007 Relevance: 6.11In an effort to fully understand the math proposed by Roman Zippel in his Really Fair Scheduler, Ingo Molnar implemented a simplified version of the logic on top of his Completely Fair Scheduler code which he then humorously labeled the Really Simple Really Fair Scheduler,"could you please confirm whether the math algorithm you are suggesting is implemented by this patch roughly correctly?"Search further
07/27/2007 Relevance: 5.79"This is a free minix-like kernel for i386(+) based AT-machines," began the Linux version 0.01 release notes in September of 1991 for the first release of the Linux kernel."As the version number (0.01) suggests this is not a mature product. Currently only a subset of AT-hardware is supported (hard-disk, screen, keyboard and serial lines), and some of the system calls are not yet fully implemented (notably mount/umount aren't even implemented)."[Not"news" really. But fun for the nostalgia inclined :-)– Sander]Search further
09/21/2006 Relevance: 5.56The sendfile facility allows a regular file to be sent out to a stream socket. The system call was first implemented in FreeBSD 3.1. This provides many performance benefits for various server appliances. Andre Opperman has implemented an improved sendfile facility for FreeBSD that has so far shown 45% less CPU usage without TCP segmentation offload and 83% less CPU usage with TCP segmentation offload. This is a great improvement over the previous implementation.[O.k., so it's FreeBSD, not GNU/Linux - but few stories are cuter than"Penguin and the Beastie" - dcparris]Search further

06/14/2007 Relevance: 4.61Chris Mason announced an early alpha release of his new Btrfs filesystem,"after the last FS summit, I started working on a new filesystem that maintains checksums of all file data and metadata." He listed the following features as"mostly implemented":"extent based file storage (2^64 max file size), space efficient packing of small files, space efficient indexed directories, dynamic inode allocation, writable snapshots, subvolumes (separate internal filesystem roots), checksums on data and metadata (multiple algorithms available), very fast offline filesystem check". He listed the following features as yet to be implemented:"object level mirroring and striping, strong integration with device mapper for multiple device support, online filesystem check, efficient incremental backup and FS mirroring".Search further
