Travails of adding a second hard disk in a PC running Linux

12/08/2006  I
Relevance: 13.69
Ever had to install a second hard disk on a machine running Linux? If it is an IDE hard disk, the jumper settings of the hard disk decide how it is detected by the computer. This article details the experiences of the author in adding a second IDE hard disk in a Linux PC.

Clone your Ubuntu installation onto a new hard disk

Relevance: 12.51
Just upgraded your system with a shiny new hard disk and want to make it your new book disk? Cloning Ubuntu to another hard disk is easy. In fact, Ubuntu provides tools to clone the entire hard disk -- including the Windows partition, if there's one on there. This is the kind of fundamental task that Linux excels at, in fact. This article is excerpted from the newly published book Ubuntu Kung Fu and published with the express permission of the publisher, the Pragmatic Programmers, LLC.

Using spindown to prolong the life of old hard disks

04/22/2008  IIIIIIIII
Relevance: 11.71
Many people leave their computers on around the clock. This usually implies that all the attached hard disks are always spinning. Constantly spinning up a hard disk normally increases the chances of drive failure. When a disk is not powered it should last longer than if it was spinning. There is a delicate balance between having a hard disk spinning down and up too frequently and leaving it spinning around the clock. If you have a filesystem that you want to have near instant access to but do so on an infrequent basis, you might like to use spindown to automatically spin down the disk containing that filesystem after you have finished accessing the drive.

How to: Monitor Linux drive temperatures with hddtemp

10/09/2007  I
Relevance: 11.70
The problem of cooling the computer is not new. The more powerful and faster computers become, the"hotter" they get. Coolers inside computer cases, video card and power supply units are quite common nowadays. However, hard disk has no additional means to cool them. Most hard disk manufacture recommends 35-40 C working temperature for a hard drive. Once it crossed the limit safety of your data and hard disk becomes critical. Computer hard drive is the main storage media for your data. This article explainshow to monitor hard disk temperature and prevent the loss of data under Linux using automated scripts.

How fast is your disk?

01/16/2007  IIIIII
Relevance: 10.80
It's a known fact that although disk storage capacities are improving at an impressive rate, disk performance improvements are occurring at a rather slower rate. Here are the two techniques for measuring disk performance in Linux. With a little bit of torturing, and some fun on the way, find out how fast your hard disk drive really is.

Five must-have apps for a new Linux install

02/17/2008  I
Relevance: 10.61
I tend to hammer my Ubuntu laptop. Running a website like Tectonic means I am constantly installing new applications to try them out. Many of which I later have to remove or lie forgotten on the hard disk until I start to wonder where the +40GB of free hard disk space went to. And when that happens I tend to back up the essentials - email, documents and website backups - format my hard disk and install a clean version of Ubuntu. Doing this every few months means that a few times a year I get to really consider what the most important applications on my desktop are.

CLI Magic: Salvage lost partitions with gpart

10/23/2006  IIIII
Relevance: 9.91
Messing up your hard disk's partition table doesn't take much effort, especially when you're preparing a dual-boot machine. Even a mistimed fdisk /mbr can spell disaster, erasing the master boot record (MBR) and making the disk unusable. But victims of damaged MBRs rejoice -- gpart can save your day. This utility scans a hard disk and prepares a partition table of areas that resemble a partition, which you can use to make the disk bootable again.

Inspecting disk IO performance with fio

04/10/2008  IIII
Relevance: 9.74
Storage performance has failed to keep up with that of other major components of computer systems. Hard disks have gotten larger, but their speed has not kept pace with the relative speed improvements in RAM and CPU technology. The potential for your hard drive to be your system's performance bottleneck makes knowing how fast your disks and filesystems are and getting quantitative measurements on any improvements you can make to the disk subsystem important. One way to make disk access faster is to use more disks in combination, as in a RAID-5 configuration.

NTFS Disk Recovery

02/12/2010  IIIII
Relevance: 9.59
Mary, the daughter of a friend is in college: her Windows XP laptop constantly reboots and, we suspect, has a bad hard drive. The system will boot a live CD (Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic Koala Desktop), and data on the hard drive can be read. During boot, the live CD identifies disk errors and tries unsuccessfully to repair them.
