Good Linux Ftp Server

Seven.Ten Degrees of Modularisation

Ubuntu Server is a popular Linux server distribution which has been gaining some good ground over the past few years, but is still behind its main commercial rivals: Red Hat Enterprise Linux and SUSE Linux Enterprise Server. However, one of the new, experimental (but stable) features in Ubuntu 7.10 Server Edition is set to change the course of all server Operating Systems in the near future, and that feature is Tasks.

Ubuntu Server: Good Concept, Flawed Execution

11/20/2007  IIIIIIIIII
Relevance: 6.94
The concept behind Ubuntu Server is wonderful— a lean, carefully-selected batch of packages that gets you up and running quickly, and that you can easily add to as you need. I can see using Ubuntu Server as a LAN server, and as a training server, but I think opening it up to the Internet is asking for trouble.

Can the Average Lawyer Install an Ubuntu Linux Server?

06/07/2008  IIIII

In April, Canonical had a major, Long Term Service (LTS) release of its Ubuntu Linux distribution, both for the desktop and the server, code-named Hardy Heron. There was quite a bit of hype on the Net about the new features and how good it was. I had also previously blogged about how I believed servers to be the entry point for Linux into the small and solo law firm, as it provides the ability to have a powerful, stable server for not a lot of money (especially since you can always retask as the server an older desktop machine in your office).

Ease of use is one of the main interests in the Ubuntu 8.10 server so administrators tend to look at Ubuntu not only because it's a staple of the Ubuntu Desktop but the server version has been known...

Linux is doing just fine on servers

My good buddy Preston Gralla would have it that"Windows doesn't just dominate the desktop, but the server market as well." Eh... I don't think so. For proof, Gralla points to the latest IDC (International Data Corporation) Worldwide Quarterly Server Tracker. This report covers the worldwide server market's factory revenue. But Gralla and other critics are missing that IDC is not measuring what server operating systems are being used; it's measuring what server operating systems people are buying, and those are bundled with their hardware purchases. Specifically, to quote IDC, the researchers are measuring"server revenue includes components that are typically sold today as a server bundle, including frame or cabinet and all cables, processors, memory, communication boards, and OS."

How To Set Up A Terminal Server In Linux Using Ubuntu 9.10 And FreeNX

01/28/2010  IIIII
Relevance: 6.02
FreeNX is an open source implementation of NoMachine's NX Server. It is a bit more akin to Microsoft's RDP protocol than the usual VNC, so while keeping bandwidth to a minimum, it maintains good visual quality and responsiveness.

Killer open source monitoring tools

In the real estate world, the mantra is location, location, location. In the network and server administration world, the mantra is visibility, visibility, visibility. If you don't know what your network and servers are doing at every second of the day, you're flying blind. Sooner or later, you're going to meet with disaster. Fortunately, there are a plethora of good tools, both commercial and open source, that can shine much-needed light into your environment. Because good and free always beats good and costly, I've compiled a list of my favorite open source tools that prove their worth day in and day out in networks of any size. From network and server monitoring to trending, graphing, and even switch and router configuration backups, these utilities will see you through.

Linux Trojan Raises Malware Concerns

06/13/2010  II
Relevance: 5.81
I've got good news and bad news for those of the misguided perception that Linux is somehow impervious to attack or compromise. The bad news is that it turns out a vast collection of Linux systems may, in fact, be pwned. The good news, at least for IT administrators and organizations that rely on Linux as a server or desktop operating system, is that the Trojan is in a game download so it should have no bearing on Linux in a business setting.
