Den nicht-linearen Open-Source-Videoeditor Kdenlive gibt es seit gestern auch in Version 0.7 für KDE 4 . Es handelt sich dabei um das erste Release für KDE 4. Das bringt einige Verbesserungen gegenüber der letzten KDE-3-Version mit. Zunächst ist die Software, die unter der GPL steht, nun besser in KDE integriert: Es gibt Anmerkungen in Nepomuk, mehr Meldungen an den Anwender und eine Fortschrittsanzeige für Jobs.

In this HowTo I will describe how to prepare an Ubuntu 8.10 server for OpenVZ. With OpenVZ you can create multiple Virtual Private Servers (VPS) on the same hardware, similar to Xen and the Linux Vserver project. OpenVZ is the open-source branch of Virtuozzo, a commercial virtualization solution used by many providers that offer virtual servers. The OpenVZ kernel patch is licensed under the GPL license, and the user-level tools are under the QPL license.

Eigentlich war es nur eine unscheinbare Meldung im Creative-Forum , die verhalten auf eine neue Version des Linux-Treibers hinweist. Für Besitzer einer Soundkarte der X-Fi-Familie ist es jedoch eine kleine Sensation: Creative stellt nicht nur den Quellcode zur Verfügung, sondern diesen auch gleich noch unter die GPL v2. Wie jedoch die ersten Foreneinträge bereits erahnen lassen, ist auch dieser Treiber nicht frei von Macken und Problemen.

Artifex Software , die Firma hinter Ghostscript verklagt eine Tochterfirma (PES) des Wahlcomputer-Herstellers Diebold wegen Copyright-Verletzung. Ghostscript ist eine Software zum Rastern, Bearbeiten und Ausdrucken von PostScript- und PDF-Dokumenten. Sie steht unter einer dualen Lizenz: Im kommerziellen Einsatz werden Lizenzkosten im Rahmen der Artifex Commercial License fällig, ansonsten kann man die Software unter der GPL nutzen.

New Qt Creator IDE from Qt Software

News emerged recently that Qt Software (formerly Trolltech) were working on their first IDE for Qt, code named Project Greenhouse. Today saw the release of the first technical preview under the name Qt Creator. The initial release is binary only, and under the terms of the Qt preview license, but the final release will be released with source code under a GPL compatible license. The initial release is available for Linux, Mac OS X and MS Windows. Read on for a users review.

Alleged Israeli GPL violation settled out of court

After two years of litigation, the parties involved in an Israeli law suit that centered on the validity of the GNU General Public License (GPL) have settled out of court. The result leaves the legal status of the GPL in Israel unresolved. As reported earlier on Linux.com, the case began in early 2006 when Alexander Rabinovitch, CEO of International Chess University (IchessU) approached Alexander Maryanovsky, the developer of Jin, a Java-based chess client, about writing a chess client and server for IchessU. When Maryanovsky declined, IchessU produced its own software, which Maryanovsky described as"95% my code and 5% theirs."

Alien Arena 2008 Receives Graphics Improvements

While not commonly mentioned at Phoronix, Alien Arena is an open-source sci-fi first-person shooter that has been around since 2004 and uses the CRX engine, which is a derivative of the Id's GPL source-code. Version 7.20 of Alien Arena 2008 was released this week and a few features had caught our attention. In addition to a number of game-play improvements, Alien Arena has received a number of improvements to its graphics renderer with GLSL program management, parallax mapping, new lighting, new shaders, and other work.
